Win2k networking question

Post by Executioner »

I have 5 pc's in my house - 2 have win2k, 2 have XP, and mine has Win98 :D

On my win98 rig, I'm able to see everyone's pc in network neighborhood. The XP pc's can't see my wife's pc which is a win2k setup. The XP machines auto logon, where my wife's pc requires her to enter a password.

In order for the XP rigs to see her's and be able to share the printer and files, do I need to create user accounts in her win2kr rig?

Make sure Client for MS Networks and File and Printer Sharing for MS Networks is installed on the network connection on all computers.

If the guest account is disabled on the XP and 2K machines, then yes you will have to create an account for each machine that will access shared resources on them.

Windows sometimes doesn't properly show all computers in Network Neighborhood/My Network Places. In WinXP you need to click on "Entire Network" and then click on the workgroup icon.

You can always just browse for any computer on the network directly. Open an Explorer window and type the network name of the computer preceded by two slashes. For instance:

\\SERVER

Then hit Enter. This works even if the computer is on a different workgroup.

Thanks for the replies.

All the pc's have the same workgroup name. In my case, it's called HOME.

I do have File & Print Sharing installed.

I'll have to check the guest account.

Do you have NetBEUI installed on your 2K and XP machines? My 2k machine could not see a Win98 machine on the other side of a hub and a router until I installed NetBEUI on the 2k rig.

Yeah, NETBEUI is installed only on the win2k rig. I thought it was not available for XP? When I decided to upgrade a win2k rig to xp, the report says that NETBEUI will be disabled (or uninstalled). I guess I'll have to check for a NETBEUI for xp.

NETBeui can be installed in XP - it's just not supported.

Go here: http://www.winxpcentral.com/windowsxp/netbeui.php

No it's not. I greatly regret that MS decided to stop suporting it because using NETBeui instead of TCP/IP is a LOT morwe secure if you unbind Client for MS Networks from TCP/IP.

also add to the fact that netbeui works only on lans, and not on the internet, so you can effectivly cut a pc off of i-net access but still allow them to be able to surf your intranet at their leisure.

I added the NETBEUI protocol, but my wife's win2k rig still can not see any others except for my other win2k rig and my win98 rig. The other 2 xp rigs are not shown, and I can't browse any of the files manually through explorer.

What is intresting is this pic:
Image
All my other pc's have an IP address and a MAC address (what is a MAC address)?

Look at the pc that says LOUISE (my wife's name). It does not have an IP address and it says it's a printer server? WTF?

The other win2k rig in the garage can see all the pc's including the xp rigs. I'm scratching my head on this one. They all plug into the same router that is located in the garage. The pc's in on the second floor, we had to install a switch because of the way the phone company dassy chained the lines to the second floor. All the pc's have internet access no problem.

Any ideas?

OK finally got it working. I selected Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties and then the WINS tab. From there, I selected "Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server" radio button. It was set to disable NETBIOS.

Thanks for everyone's help.
