Man Down Man Down! Man Up Man Up!
Hey guys, got up this morning and got online as usual, no problems.. Sitting there watching a show and what not, look back over at the computer and Y! (Yahoo Messenger) has disconnected. So I double click on it and try to reconnect, then I realize my connection is dead. I figured heh, no problem, just overloaded the modem (don't know how was only UL at 15KBps w/Max of 45). So I unplug the modem, reboot the computer, plug the modem back in. No go. The Rcv Light is blinking on and off. The other two lights (Online/Send) stay out. My PC activity light is doing it's thing as well. Well, by the time this happens I have to get to work, so I hit the road. I get to work, and look up their knowledge base and they say I need to call them. Great, good thing it's 24-7 Tech Support (RoadRunner). So now, when I get home I get to look foward to holding for who knows how long to find out what the problem is. So until I get it figured out, I'll have to put a modem in the computer and (joy) be on 56k for a while. I hope this is a problem they can fix on their end. But I tend to believe the modem has taken a dump. Why you ask? Because I unhooked all the cords from the modem and just hooked the power back up to it and got the same thing. It's one of those black Surfboards.. Anybody else experienced this? Should I just go out and buy another cable modem tonight and if that doesn't work (WalMart) I can take it back tomorrow? Appreciate your thoughts and ideas..

Done Some More Googling...
And I've discovered that the receive light blinking usually indicates that the down stream cannot be located and since this is the first step in the chain, none of the other lights will go from there. So the modem probably is not dead, but I'm not receiving a signal from the cable company. I don't have cable TV so I couldn't verify it that way. Hopefully, since it died at 11:00, it will be back on when I get home. If not, a phone call I'll be making. heh.. Well, if anybody else w/Road Runner in my area NE Louisiana is having problems, please post so I know that I'm not alone!

Thanx for the response Greg, my theory is as yours and they're just down for some reason, I just hope it's back when I get home, I sure as hell don't want to have to pull out a 56k and go to town! lol..

try this (on a PC connected to the modem
)you should be able to see what exactly is happening.
No point in calling a tech that only knows how to power cycle, and what the funny little lights are doing.

even if you don't have cable TV there should be a signal, plug it into the TV and see if you do get anything. ( with me and Comcast we had Cable internet with no TV, and still got all the free chans, and even the paid ones when they ran it for free )
In some areas they put a ch2-185 filter that blocks all channels outside in the box. He made it sound like he had this already.

I have the same filter myself, it doesn't block all channels, Roadrunner goes on the same frequency as channels 1-99 do so it would work. I have had my modem die before and in one case it was an issue with the line, would work well for cable tv but not roadrunner.
Also one other thing happened, someoen elses modem on the same network was having issues in which it had knocked me off, so thats one thing to make sure. call them and ask to see what is going on, their techs are only incompetant in certain areas and times of day

Channel Filters..
I am guessing those are in place. Because I have tried hooking up the cable to different TVs at different times and not gotten any signal what so ever. In fact, when I first moved in, I had cable, then I had RoadRunner installed and no more cable.. lol.. So that filter must be in place. Thanks for all the info guys. eGo

Let them come out and diagnose it. Keep in mind that if you do change cable modems, you still have to call them and give them the MAC number for the new modem or it won't work. Your account is locked to your modem's MAC number to prevent someone from stealing broadband by spoofing.

Ok.. Didn't know that about the MAC address, but it makes sense. Would you recommend (providing it is dead) that I get different one, or let the cable company take care of it? Just curious. I doubt getting another modem will yield better results 350KBps down and 45KBps up ain't bad I say.. I just hope that it was just a little outage and all is well when I get home.

the modem wont make your connection go beyond what your supposed speed is supposed to be. Your 350down/45kup is right on par with your advertised speed, so a new modem (provided its of good quality) will yeild the same results as your current one. But a different modem might be more reliable
When you say your connection was dropped cause of overloading the modem....its got NOTHING to do with speed, but rather trying to force too many connections at once. Take for instance BitTorrent. You can possibly only upload at 15-20k/s....but if you are splitting that between a LOT of people, then that would be overloading your connection because of how many packets you would have to send out to each seperate system.
I saw this happening a lot with my old POS belkin router. Too many connections=dropped connection.
Other possibility....your connection was just dropped for maintaince or an outage, happens all the time and its nothing unusual. It might be back up once you get home. If its not, call them up and ask if there are any reported outages in your area and whats going on to get it fixed
