What is Fli4L?

Fli4l is a single floppy Linux-based ISDN, DSL and Ethernet-Router. You can build it from an old 486 based pc with 16 megabyte memory, which is more than adequate for this purpose.

The necessary boot-disk can be built under Unix, Linux or Windows. You don't need any specific Linux-knowledge, but this would be useful. You should have some basic knowledge about networking, TCP/IP, DNS and routing though. For extensions and further development, that exceed the standard configuration, you need a working Linux-system and Unix/Linux knowledge.

I guess you could try to put the created floppy image on a bootable CD.

Another router software solution is IPCop, a dedicated router/firewall Linux distro which installs on a hdd and offers a nice webinterface for changes and administration once installed. I use this one currently on a P133 as my DSL-router/firewall (current uptime 27 days, 3:13). There's even a howto for installing it on a 64MB IDE-Flash module to create a silent mini-itx solution in the german C'T computermag.
IPCop is currently working on version 1.4 which will include some nice new features like traffic-shaping, it is now in beta stadium 1.4.0b3 .

I will check out IPCop I decided to make one of my old rigs a dedicated box. I tried installing smoothwall and can't get crap out of it. I get it to run, it pulls up the network, but I never get any signals. Not sure why. But since IPCop seems to be a little more reknowned I will try it.
