Building my website

Post by pseizure2000 »

I wasn't sure where to post this but here goes....

I am building my own website...only nitch is that I have no idea of what I am doing. I have no idea of how to even access the databases and assemble them. And the FTP program confuses the malarky out of me. I don't have much dough but I will be able to give 200 bucks to the person who is kind enough to help me. I already have a host and 3 years worth of hosting. After that I am all confused with MySQL and PHP. :s cratch

If you're new to web page design, and you're trying to program an SQL database and use PHP then you've probably bitten off more than you can chew. This is not something to take on lightly. SQL programming is rather technical.

You have any programming experience?

I'm no SQL programmer so I can't help you.

Does the website have to have an SQL database? What are you doing with it?

I don't have any programming experience with SQL or PHP. It doesn't have to have an SQL database but it has to have some sort of database system.

It'll basically be a sort of database to keep track of the items people have and their accounts and such.

Challenging 1st time web project. You might want to bring in a web monkey to do it.

LoL...that's what I've been trying to do...I think I'll probably go around to some PHP or SQL forum to find somebody because no one seems to know how to do it.

What kind of website are you planning? You might not need to go the PHPO, SQL route unless you're looking at large databases.

So you setting up your own Half_ebay.com site?

Ok keep listing fees cheap and don't be greedy like e-bay, always adding things to cause problems and run off sellers trying to gouge us for an extra dime all the time and you might have a winner ;)

Let me know when it's running nicely and I'll list some items :D

Okay talk to you in 1 year.:laugh

TheSovreign said it'd take 1000s of hours of programming....but I think that maybe with a small team of crack programmers I might be able to get it running withing a few months....6 maybe.

If you would like something like a cross between ebay-half.com, it is going to be a huge project.

It really depends on if you are looking for a big site with lot of users or if you are concentrating on a small group like a university, school, or your office.

If it is a small site, you can get several free scripts that you could use and get the site live in one day. If it is a big site, you might want to consider a better host, buy the domain name before someone snags it and hire a bunch of developers to work on hundreds/thousands of hours writing the code.
