Router and wireless together

Post by BillyGoat »

Heres the situation.
My newtork is wired, usreing a limksys router, just optained a dlink wireless router and would like to add said router to existing network. Im assuming all I have to do is disable dhcp on the wireless router and plug port 1 of it into the uplink port of the linksys wired router. Broudband is coming in via wan port on wired one.

Pretty much, but you also need to configure the IP address.

What you want to do is use the wireless router soley as an Access Point (AP).

- Connect the AP to a computer BY ITSELF (off the network) to configure it first.

- Disable DHCP and change the LAN IP address to one that's on the same prefix as the Linksys router, but a different address. Linksys routers are usually 192.168.1.1 so make the AP 192.168.1.2. Make a note of this IP address somewhere on the AP so you know how to access it later (I like to put a post it note on the bottom with the IP, password and Crypto key).

- Now connect the AP to your existing network BUT make the connection to the SWITCH side of the AP NOT the WAN jack. The WAN jack on the AP will remain unconnected.
