Allowing my Win98 rig to see the files on a Win2k rig
I'm running Win98 inside my house. In my garage, I have a rig running Win2k (my movie cruncher). From the Win2k rig in the garage, I'm able to see my Win98 rig inside the house, and access the files on all the drives.
When I try to access the Win2k rig from the Win98 rig, it says,
\\Home is not accessable
no permission to access resouce
How can I get my Win98 rig to access the win2k rig? On the Win2k rig, it always logs in with the adminstrative account (I know it's not the correct way and I should create a user account). How do I go about creating an account instead of it always booting with the adminastrative account? Is that the reason I can't see the drives?
On my Win98 rig, I have the following protocols:
client for microsoft networks
file and print sharing
TCP/IP 3com Etherlink PCI
On the Win2k rig, I have basiclly the same protocols installed (jsut looks different than Win98).
TIA

Win2K/XP is high security. You need to create a user account for whatever user name you're using on the Win98 system. If the 98 system is logged on as Bob then create a Bob user account on the 2K system.
You should assign a password to it too. No need to logon to the 98 system with a password - 98 will prompt for a password the first time you access any shared resources on the 2K box and then remember the password.
No problem logging on locally with the Admin account on the 2K system - but you should password protect it to keep someone from hacking in from the net. You can always use TweakUI to automate the logon so you don't have to enter the password locally.
Setup user accounts & passwords here: Control Panel > Administrative Tools > COmputer Management > Local Users & Groups > Users

OK thanks FP. Got that to work, but I can't see any drives on my Win98 rig. The entire window is blank with only the connection discription of the network in the drop down window. Does this mean I need to install NetBEUI? I've heard that NETBEUI is not that secure of a protocol, especially on win98.

I've always needed to install Netbeui to have totall file visabilty, sharing access here. If you use firewall SW like ZoneAlarm, you shouldn't have to worry about security IMO.
As for Win98, it's been a while but upgrading to 98SE was an improvement.
Just a Q, why even use Win98 anymore unless it's a VERY old PC with little ram? Every box I have here runs on Win2K.

You don't NEED NetBEUI but it does work better on 98 (remember to install it on both systems).
You also need to have "File and printer sharing for MS networks" installed on the 98 system, and then click on the file and printer sharing button in network settings and make sure you have "Allow others to access my files" checked.

Well I added NetBEUI to both systems and still no go. The win2k rig can see and copy files from the Win98 rig, but the win98 rig can't see the files on the win2k rig.
On Win98 I have the following protocols:
Client for Microsoft Networks
3Com Etherlink PCI NIC
NetBUEI ->3Com Etherlink PCI NIC
TCP/IP ->3Com Etherlink PCI NIC
File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks (I have clicked on the selection box for File and Print Sharing and both boxes are checked).
I have also made sure that my drives are shared by right-clicking on each drive and selecting sharing, then shared as from the option boxes.
On the win2k rig, I have basically the same protocols setup including NetBEUI (no properties available). It also has file and print sharing protocol installed. I also verifed that the drives are shared by going into Computer Management and viewing the shares.
What is really strange is while on my win98 rig, if I click on the icon for the win2k rig, it displays Network Neighborhood icon in the drop down selection window, and then I have to select the name of the win2k pc from the drop down selection window. The win98 pc's name is "Dads", and the win2k is "Garage". So Iexpect to see Gargage when I double-click on the icon but it displays Network Neighborhood. Both selections have nothing in the open window. Does all this make sense?
btw, the win2k rig has fat32 on C, NTFS on D, and fat32 on E. So I would expect to see drives C and E only.
===== EDIT =====
OK it got it to work by sharing folders not an entire drive. So can you share the entire C drive like I can in win98?

Yes, you can share the whole drive.
Make sure you actually have the drive shared. By default the drive has a special share and preceded with a dollar sign like this $C. That's a local admin share for users on the local computer only. Press the Add a Share button to create an actual share for the network.

Glad you fixed that. I STILL have never figured out why my other PCs can't see the laptop at all but the laptop can see them, I can deal with it though as the problem isn't a big deal to me, just mysterious.
As for any crashing, none of my Win2K PCs EVER crash. That was totally cured by a simple, painless upgrade to Win2K.
