What the Hell...

Alright I have gotten VERY fed up with this whole DSL situation....
I now have the DSL going to the GF's computer and my comp is networked with hers...
I have a half assed internet on my computer....IE, I can get onto MSN, sometimes check my hotmail account, I can go to google.ca no problem and search for things, but when I have searches returned to me I click the link and nothing happens.....I can't even get to download.com....

so... some webpages work and some do not....
everything works fine on the GF's computer... I can download things and basically go anywhere...

I have released and renewed the IP's numerous times (that's how I got it to this point...)
but...I would like to be able to go download things onto my computer!!

anybody have any ideas??
what should my setting be for both computers??

GF's computer has 2 NICs *1 for modem and *2 for LAN.
#1 LAN has IP address of 192.168.0.1 (microsoft says to put it to that)
#2 MODEM is on Auto obtain

My comp has 1 NIC
#1 LAN set to Obtain auto as well

could be any settings I have over looked?? IE settings??

any questions?? LMK

any help would be great

thanks guys !!!

well, you can't do ICS with DSL that uses PPPoE

you need a router.

I had the same problems years ago before I got my router, got the router and everything worked fine

this is the same setup I have done last year and the year before
only difference is I upgraded and did a fresh install of WinXP Pro (which is exactly the same OS I had on my comp the previous years)
it all worked fine
First year I did it, I bridged the networks and it worked 100%
second year (last year) I didn't need to bridge anthing and it worked 100%

now, it only half works

but yeah a router would be nice, I don't have the cash to put out for one though (University)
Besides, it worked before it'll work again! :D

hmm, does it use PPPoE or do you have your own IP address from your ISP?

PPPoE

and the other times it was PPPoE as well
I dunno, as it is I have been going back and forth between computers, right now I'm on the GF's comp.
But mine has been able to get on some websites, and if I can't I just go onto this comp and use the net....
gets to be a hassle when the GF wants to do her online things though :)

hmmm, I have NEVER seen any PPPoE DSL be able to be shared with out a router.....

You need to stop messing around with Internet Connection sharing - just get a router, they're only $40 - $50.

PPPOE can be very flaky.

I think this can be fixed with a lil adjustment of the MTU size. You can try to decrease the MTU value from 1500 Byte on your PC to a lower value. See if this helps to fix this issue: http://www.carricksolutions.com/pppoe.php#17

It works, but as FP metioned it is very flaky.

Yes try seeting your MTU to 1492 or 1480.

More info here: http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread ... adid=73799 Go down to where is says XP PPPoE MTU Fix - If you are using XP's PPPoE software.
