Lately, my stupid DSL connection hangs every 10 minutes or so...

Post by Sean »

AND IT'S PISSSSING ME OFF!!!! :| :|

For some really stupid reason, about every 10 minutes, IE or my connection, hangs. So I have to close all my frickin windows and hope my connection is back.

Could this be corruption in Windows? Or is our DSL ISP just really crappy?

I have been getting lots of reboots (actually only 2) and just plan dead-locks. My mouse disappears and everything comes to a halt. Just last night I got a blue screen, first since the few I had 4 days ago. I'm beginning to think there is something corrupted in my install or my PSU is just dropping lines at certain points, causing lockups. I did drop my multiplyer, reluctantly, to 11, instead of 11.5.

So annoying...

first try it on another computer to rule out your install. After that run traceroutes to see if there is any problems there. Here at my work our connection was going bonkers for a while, dns lookups were failing and portions of the internet were completely inaccessable. Come to find out even though we were 8 blocks from the telco, we were wired as such as running threw 5 times that in copper, and the speed we were trying to push was causing the problems.

Throttled the line down to roughly 800k and all stability returned- 1.5 was nice, but we couldnt use it 90% of the time

Make that 3 minutes...and it's not just my computer.

OneWest will be getting a call from my soon. It isn't as fast as our last DSL service AND NOW it's lagging like this?! NOT ACCEPTABLE!

I'd get my dad to go cable, but all we have is CableOne and their prices are off the wall!

Just did a speed test, I got 481/198 I'm suppose to get 640/256

Not to mention it lags continually. I can't imagine that it could be our $300 router. The thing is overkill for our connection. The Cisco 678 is definately not the weakest link here.

What do ya think?

Did I mention is happens on all computers? :) :mad

481/198 wouldnt be to outa line for a 640/256 connection
The latency is your problem, do some traceroutes to try to isolate where the speedbump is

What do you suggest I test? I mean, I can access anything for 3 minutes. Then it seems to just die on me for 2 and comes back if I close all my windows. Seems to be getting worse. I can't even navigate thru these forums without giving me a Cannot Find Server error.

Really annoying... :|

Sean you might wanna try the connection without the router, could be defective dsl modem????? I had problem similar once on with cable where it would hang, i called att and they send out a technician and he worked on the lines, whatever he did on lines fixed problem. You might wanna call isp provider to inspect dsl line and make any adjustment neccesary.

Well, our Router and DSL Modem are the same thing. Our Cisco 678 is acting as teh DHCP server and the modem. I'm almost positive that it's not the Cisco 678. This thing is made for 40x more traffic then what our house has, it isn't even breaking a sweat. :)

I plan on giving them a call tomorrow. First I'll call OneWest, then I'll be claling Qwest. ;)

I have some pictures here of a few traceroutes. Basically is jsut shows that every few minutes the internet just hangs on me. What other domains/IP's should I try?

I figured out what was wrong.

It seems every few minutes, modem loses it's DSL connection, and it takes a few minutes to reconnect.

It did this about a month ago, but only when I was playing games. It also got a bit worse when I hooked up my phone to the same phone line connector as the modem (it had a filter).

That shouldn't matter, and we shouldn't lose our connection. So, I'm going to be giving Qwest a call today and maybe my ISP first. I want this sorted out asap! :D

Same here. I know I and my dad will not be happy if we have to make this even slower. We pay over $50 for DSL, and if we don't even get our full speed I think we may have a big excuse to go cable. :(

Pretty disappointing especially when we came from a faster speed (we were paying the same amount for the same thing). Speeds are slower here and now it can't stay connected...

OMG!

Guess what I just found out? Our ISP has us as 640/256 BUT QWEST has us as 256/256!!!

OMFG!! I've gone this long like this! I KNEW IT WAS SLOWER! HAHA!

That's GOT to be why. And my dad was also wondering why prices were so low... :D

Kickass!!! WAHOO!!

Nope, wrong there. She didn't know what she was talking about (our ISP). So, speeds are right, but the dude at Qwest is checking our line now. My guess is that they haven't upgraded the lines out here yet, so that may be why.

They'll have to soon though. Cable it expensive here DSL's the best way to go. :D

He did a line test and found that the line is pretty long and could be what is causing problems. Unfortunately the connection has stopped disconnecting on me in the last hour. What's with that?! LOL

So, they're sending a technician down here this afternoon or tomorrow morning (hopefully tomorrow morning cause I'll be home then). I'd say they should get everything up to spec down here anyway, we are just one of the many new houses that have yet to be built in this neighborhood, and there'll be lots of people going for DSL because Cable is so expensive here.

I'll let you all know what happens! :D

sean, i bet 5.00 the technician finds nothing wrong, (my experience her at work) If not, issists the put your line on a 48 or 72 hour monitor, during this time they monitor all activity and all the stuff will be logged, thats how we actually got covad to admit there was a problem, they always blame our epipment and not theres
