well,, after making sure my computer was "clean", i called ISP.
speedtests from assorted sites { speedtest.net, 2wire.com, speakeasy.net, and verizon's own speedtest site } showed an array of speeds: DL ranging from 896Kbps - 2.27 Mbps, and UL ranging from 18 Kbps to 192 Kbps.
modem is showing is @ speed it should be.
basically telling me prob is my computer and nothing they can do...
then i suggested running trace route on verizon site { i had ran a few prior to calling }.
ran several of them while i was talking to internet support..
trace route showed several hops w/ "*" to verizon CORE rtr.
i think this was in my favor in a manner of speaking, 'cause then i was put on w/someone else, who said appears that routing is going on/off, and i should keep my modem on through the night until i get a call tomorrow that they are done testing.
depending on test result { they will test it every 1/2-hr }, they may have to send someone.
when i commented i was worried of leaving modem on so long because it runs hot as it is { hotter than "warm" }, the guy said he'd authorize another replacement router/modem combo.
and here is a kick in the pants,,, i was told the day they authorized the other replacement modem in feb., verizon was experiencing problems in my area and that it probably wasn't the older modem @ all, but the order to send a replacement was sent before they were notified of the issue.
i do not know what* to believe when it comes to them,,
i do not really know what the "*"'s mean, except that it means it is taking way longer than it should be. i hope they find something so it can be fixed.
can someone explain to me a bit what that means in better terms?? ~ thank you.
gotta go,, this has taken me ages to get on and post here.

i hope you have not jinxed yourself now, Exec!
well,,, my speed has returned to normal.
{ more of a case of where the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing,, }
meanwhile i received replacement modem. i am going to send it back.
why? ~ 'cause it is a 3+yr-old model, and not the newer, current model that i have.
i think replacements they send should be equal to, or better, than what a customer has ~ not worse.
{ i have 30 days to return either modem, so i will hang on to it for a while }
now that my speed has returned, you can see the change in the tracert results as well.
unbelievable.

déjà vu?? a bit too coincidental for me,,darcy wrote: and here is a kick in the pants,,, i was told the day they authorized the other replacement modem in feb., verizon was experiencing problems in my area and that it probably wasn't the older modem @ all, but the order to send a replacement was sent before they were notified of the issue.

no,, i have not researched bsod from other week, ~ it was a "driver_irql__not_less_or_equal" error message. all i have been able to get to is to check whether my devices were working properly { there were no yellow exclamation icons }
the other was something w/"sysdata.xml".
i swear, if i do not lol right now, i am going to burst into tears,,
when i powered up earlier today for the first time, i was able to surf fine for a few minutes, and then BANG! my connection goes down { "PPP DOWN" }. i do not know what the heck is going on here, i feel like i have been caught up in a tornado or something,, matter of fact, i feel like i have touched down in Oz and cannot find my ruby slippers.

it sounds to me like there is an issue with the wiring somewhere...DSL can be very flaky if you're on older copper or farther away from the DSLAM, etc.
my connection was always stable for YEARS...now that i'm upgraded to a much faster speed tier, i get slow-downs now and then. this is due to the "crosstalk" in the phone lines and the frequencies being used that begin to bleed over into the DSL range. a coworker of mine that used to be a DSL tech went into gross detail about it, but i started to drool and twitch when he got too technical. hahaha
summary: what type of cabling are you using? is it an older home or apartment? far away from the CO/DSLAM, etc?

lol @ drooling and twitching, b-man, and thank you for post : )
if by cabling you mean my ethernet cable, i am using a Belkin Cat5E crossover patch cable ~ i always have used this type. i think it is 25' ~ i am not always in the same room { i have a laptop }.
it is an apartment, in a building about 50yrs old.
no clue what a CO/DSLAM is, but if you mean the infamous "box" that they always refer to, it is on the corner of my block.
i remember a few yrs ago, we had no phone or internet service @ the same time.
they sent a guy to our apt to 1st check our phone, then he said he was going to "the box" on the corner. he called us while he was at "the box" { apparently having fixed our phone trouble
}, and told us the line in use for our internet was not right. i cannot remember exactly what he said, but he could see something was not right or was not testing right. we asked if we had to place separate call to tech support, and he said yes, normally that is what we would have to do, but he said he would contact the office for us. { he was a pretty nice guy, 'cause that was over and beyond what he was required to do }. we had internet service back in a few hours.
but that example was no service @ all, compared to the slow loading i was having.
i am still debating what to do w/the older model modem they sent me as a replacement,, apparently the last time i had slow page loading, the modem was not @ fault, rather there was a service problem that tech support was not aware of @ the time of my calls.
{ i found this out when i called my isp when the problem re-surfaced this month. }.
i do not know what to think based on all this,,
KeyKeeper ~ my speed went back to normal the day the replacement modem arrived, so it is still in the box.
{ i am still using the D90 they sent me to replace the A90 in feb.; now they have sent me an A90 to replace the D90! }
here is screenshot from Event Viewer when i lost connection.

connection type while logged into modem gateway is "PPP", i just checked.
here is sample of just one of many similar tracert results, AFTER they said my line was clear! ~

tracert taking a few mins ago ~ { i have now learned how to copy and paste from DOS screen
