im still running my home wireless network using an old Linksys 4-port Wireless B router through Comcast Cable.
i don't notice any issues when browsing and with occassional online gaming. problem is 8/10 times i can't finish any file i download off the internet. the download starts then simply stops after awhile. sometimes it'll stop in the beginning, halfway through or worse at almost 99% done
it happens on both my wired pc and wireless laptop and desktop. i pretty much singled out the router as when i connected my main pc directly to the cable modem downloads all work fine.
as a last resort i was just wondering whether there's a setting on the router that i should make/change. or should i go with the flow and finally upgrade my router?
i solely use Firefox to browse and download. if the download freezes and i pause then continue nothing happens. i tried using getright but i hate the hassle of having to do so when i should be able to download files in the first place.
nevermind... i figured out the firmware upgrade procedure. since i never upgraded the firmware when i 1st bought the router i had the old admin/setup page. i had to upgrade to an older version. once i did that the new setup page has an option to upgrade within the web based utility.
anyway i'm downloading some huge test files now.. let's see what happens
thanks DoPeY5007, looks like the firmware upgrade did the trick. i dloaded 2 huge files at the same time and it completed. these were from servers that would only get like 5% done then freeze before.
as an update the old download issue i have is now gone but there's a new one
at times i will drop the internet connection and need to reset the modem and router. sometimes it will work for a week or at worse only hours. when it stops working i obviously lose internet connection plus i can't even access the router setup utility (192.168.1.1) unless i reset everything. Direct connection from my PC to Cable modem is fine.
any ideas? i was planning on getting a new router with the current rebate offers on Linksys or D-Link. I always used Linksys in the past and have no experience with D-Link. Anyone use D-Link here, if so any personal reviews/issues?
or is it simply common to drop connections once in a while. how long has your routers gone without needing any resetting or rebooting?
i use d-link their stuff is great i got 2 wireless routers 1 plain router a pci wireless card and a pcmcia wireless card and a 4port switch all have been great devices. the wireless stuff is being used for a housewide print server since i got no dsl out here. the wired router is just in its box now. oh and its very easy to setup
