Network/Internet Problem

Hey guys..

Before my bedroom PC upgrade I was running a PIII 450 with same software configuration as current.

After my upgrade, I formatted my PC to have a fresh install etc with my new hardware. Since that, my internet doesn't function too well in my room.

Winmx/Kazaa will connect without problem
Only certain websites will load (google being one)
MSN 6.2 will NOT run at all.

I've tried reconfiguring firewalls etc etc

any suggestions ?

Is this broadband? Could be your provider is having DNS issues.

Are you using a router? Have you tried powering the router and modem off and on?

Have you tried connecting the modem directly to the computer (by passing the router) to see if it's a router issue (note, if you're on cable, you need to power off your modem before connecting it to a different device - the modem locks itself to the computer or router's MAC address)?

Have you tried completely disabling your firewall to make sure it's not causing problems?

Check for Spyware. Also check your HOSTS file to see if certain sites are being blocked.

Nah unfortunately, I have a 56k connection, setup as a peer to peer (one to one) network. Basically have the internet running through the Main (living room PC) computer, and access to the internet via LAN cable.

When you share a 56k connection, make sure you turned off the firewall on the lan card going to your internal network. That firewall might be causing your problems.

Only other thing I can think of is to run the network set-up wizard again on each of the computers.

Check the HOSTS file - could be you have a trojan that's blocking certain domains.

Ok.

I've run the wizard I dunno how many times on each setup, to no avail, and the only firewall I have running (on lan/internet) is Zone Alarm, configured to accept network conditions.

I think when you run the network wizard, it sets up the firewall automatically on the lan connection sharing the connection. Also something a friend of mine does to cut down on possible network problem is disables the authinication for the network, since it's mainly used for wireless cards.
