my current "home" network is all "wired". it's basically:

cable modem to
linksys 4 port router to
2 pcs & 1 laptop.

the wifey is soon to get her own laptop and wants to be able access the internet from almost anyplace in the house without the cables following her around :)

i'm kinda confused on what i need to get. i obviously know i'm gonna need a wireless network card for her laptop but what else. should i just go ahead and ditch my current router and get a wireless router with a 3/4 port switch? or should i get a wireless access point (i'm kinda confused on how this works to/or if i really need one)?

anyway i'm looking for the most cost effective way of going wireless for her laptop. i've been happy with Linksys products but i've noticed that D-Link is alot cheaper. advice anyone??? :)

well, there are two things you can do.

  • Go get a wireless access point
  • go get a router / wireless access point in one

Getting the stand alone WAP us more $ then getting the WAP / Router in one...

so if you are going the cheapest, then get a D-Link Router WAP in one....

i have heard that you may get more range from a wap - plus you can stick it at the end of a cable instead of near where all your other stuff plugs in

personally, if I go wireless I need a WAP and not a Router / WAP in one.... cause I have the dual line router... :D

I'm using a D-Link wireless router/AP. Works fine.

the 614+ is known to have problems w/ SBC/ameritech DSL. i have a 3com officeconnect at home, a netgear at my office, and a smc one at the gf's.... all wlan (802.11b).
