Case cooling help

Post by jforth »

Upgraded my 466 celeron to a 1.0 celly on a Asus p2-99b m/b.Noticed the case is warm to
touch where the cpu hsf exhausts.I checked hsf its quite warm, but not hot.I installed a case
fan to suck in cool air but it didn't make difference.I took off the case ,unplugged the case fan
(too loud)hsf seems cooler without the case on.Other than drilling holes in my case side to
vent the air from hsf, what are my options?I don't want to leave the case off all the time.Thanks.

Are you using the stock heatsink/fan that came with the CPU? If so, you should upgrade to a better heatsink. I am fairly certain that most Socket A heatsinks will fit a Socket 370 board, but you cant always be sure. I know that this heatsink can be used on Socket 370 processors and is getting excellent reviews from every site that I know of. I plan on purchasing one myself for my Duron in a short while. It uses an 80mm fan, so it is very quiet, and performs very well.

Also, you should buy a suiet chassis fan, such as a Panaflo or Vantec Stealth for an exhaist fan above the CPU, if you have a mounting hole for it. If not, thats not good. Any case fans are better than none, but its always best to have a fan exhausting all the hot air from around the CPU. An intake fan is secondary to that, but is still important. And since you mentioned quiet, both of the fans that I alluded to are very very quiet and offer decent airflow.
Every so often I try to masturbate a large word into my conversation, even if I'm not sure what it means.

Thanks SWScorch,I am using the retail intel hsf that came with the cpu.It seems of decent quality. As I have an at style case my p/s is above the cpu hsf,I think the p/s fan will exhaust the rising air.But my hsf/cpu is mounted on a slotket(slot 1 board),so the hot air from the hsf is exhausted to the sides of the case instead of front to back.Thats why it runs cooler with the case off,I think.Hope this clarifies things.
