Ordered a Rift.

I was planning on waiting for 2nd gen, but finally decided what the heck. I read a ton of reviews on both and decided on the rift because the new controllers seem better, it has clearer field of view, and you can use any Vive software on it. I don't have enough space anywhere to set up room scale like the Vive and the odd of me jumping around for a long time shooting at thing is slim.
I've been watching all the sales, and the rift popped up on Amazon at regular price but with a $100 amazon gift card. Controllers not included (ordered, but on backorder. There is a similar deal at Amazon UK but for a $100 Oculus store credit. Apparently some UK people may have gotten controllers in the package. The one I ordered did show controllers in the pics, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

WOW. Seriously. WOW
I waited to set this up until I could get the hand controllers. I ended up with 2 sets b/c I wanted it by xmas, so I ordered from Amazon and Oculus, figuring I'd cancel one when the other shipped. Both shipped on the same day. I'll return the amazon one.
SETUP. Really simple. plug in headset, tracking thingies, etc. Very good tutorial on how to set up your touch sensors and calibrate them for your playspace. I am using a very small space atm because that's all I have - about 4x3 ft.
Once you get it all hooked up and the parts talking to each other, then there is a series of how-to on the controllers. Then onto a VR demo of how to use your new translucent hands flaoting in space. You have to take program cartridges from a robot, insert them in a computer or a 3-d printer. You can make butterflies, rockets, maracas.
The whole experience is really amazing. I bought some programs on Steam - video player, tilt brush, but atm I can't log into steam (thanks high school kids on vacation) to download the steam to oculus program. grr.
Fit and finish on everything is very good. The headseat is comfortable, and I have a big head (7 3/4), lots of adjustments. The coolest thing is I can use it without glasses!!! I had cataract surgery on both eyes last year and have long distance lenses in both eyes. I use glasses to play games and type @1080 and 1440 but I can see pretty well without them. The controllers will take a while to figure out, but they are light and have a boatload of controls and options. The tutorial I did complete has you point at things using your finger, grasp things and move them, etc. more as we get deeper into this!

Very cool. You ought to try the Resident Evil 7 Demo:

First Person Horror games seem destined for VR.
The Town of Light also supports VR:

I want to hear your opinion on the Rift experience with Elite Dangerous. I really still feel VR is going to be best tailored to flight sims.
However I hear that Super Hot works very well on the Rift. Good game. I enjoyed the hell out of it.

It's going to take more than a little while to get this figured out. the rift controllers are sort of an xbox split in two, lots of buttons and I'm not used to that type of controller. My main issue right now is my DollarG internet, since I have a whole bunch of stuff waiting to download, and it is particularly slow because of the holiday.
no biter/zombie stuff for me right now - but I may give it a whirl later.
I haven't patched Elite in well over a year, so that is probably a 2 day download

, have to save that for later I may get super hot, if that's the matrixy one.
Did get tilt brush running last night and that is really cool. I've run into a couple of apps that don't run on Win7.

Yeah, Super Hot is the first person shooter that's like Matrix - everything slows down when you stop moving. I finished the main game and now doing the challenges. People are saying it works great in the VR version.
