from a samsung 840 to a samsung 850

fired up acronis >clone drive>after computer stops, pull source drive > restart > no boot drive... tried a couple of time, this is 101 stuff I've done many times before.

bios sees the 850 - have set it as 1st boot

windows sees the 850

installed 850 drivers

??? :E

What drivers? Its a SATA SSD right? No drivers required.

Same SATA port as the old drive? If so there should be no issues. If you're changing SATA ports or going from SATA to M.2 then Windows may not boot until you rebuild the boot sectors. But same port should be no problem.

Is this win8 or win10 and if so, is secure boot enabled? Even though the latest 2016 acronis is supposed to be fully compatible with UEFI and secure boot, I find it's better to disable UEFI if possible, do the clone, then re-enable it.

If you do a clone with UEFI enabled then you have to boot acronis under UEFI. I never do a clone from windows. I boot with an acronis rescue disk or flash drive.

Can you see the drive from windows if you connect it as a spare?

Might need to update the SSD firmware which you can do with it connected as a spare.

Win7. same port, same cables. Old and new ssd. I can see the drive connected as a spare. I didn't fool with firmware. It just doesn't seem bootable. No secure boot or uefi as far as I know, can check that. I may have some funky cables.

Win7 by default didn't use UEFI or Secure boot.

You may just need to rebuild the boot sectors. Even though you're using the same SATA port, for some reason sometimes Windows assigns a new drive a different device address so when the boot loader on the drive (the bootstrap that gets things started) tries to load the OS, it can't find it because it's pointing to an invalid drive address.

You need to use a Windows 7 installation CD and choose Repair your computer, then select the Recovery Console. When you are logged on, you can run FIXBOOT command to to fix boot sector.

That usually fixes it. If it doesn't, you can also try the FIXMBR command. Or BOOTREC.EXE /FIXMBR

Hope this helps...

Is there a reason for not cloning under windows? I usually perform my backup's under windows.

Have you tried using Samsung's Data Migration software? When I upgraded from a 240GB PNY to a 512GB Samsung, I used it out of an abundance of laziness, and it did pretty good. You can get it from their Tool and Software downloads page.

I looked at the Samsung utility, but it says it erases the source drive.... I've never felt lucky enough to try that :)

I'll try what FP suggested.

Frankly I don't trust it and I also despise that Windows GUI. Besides you aren't ACTUALLY running a clone from Windows because it's impossible - you need exclusive access to the drive. So what Acronis does is temporarily change the boot partition to allow Acronis to boot a Linux OS running Acronis and then runs the clone from there.

I'd rather just boot from the rescue flash drive and do it from there. I don't install the Windows version at all except on my workstation so I can have it make weekly scheduled images.

On all my other PCs I just boot the Acronis flash drive when I want to make an image. I don't need all those bloated Acronis services running all the time on my gaming PC or laptop for instance.

BTW I've had lots of people tell me that the free version of the EaseUS ToDo backup is very good for cloning: http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/download.htm

wvjohn: Better instructions here. I typed those in a hurry on my cell phone the other day:

ok. got it. Had to create a repair cd from the existing win7 drive, reboot to new drive and then let it repair. Assume it fixed the MBR > it just said look for problems > problems found > fix problems.

putting in a win7 oem disk > install>repair just returned message "wrong version"

Thx everybody! what a pain for such a simple issue.
