Static electricity

This is really strange issue. I never had this problem before. Before starting a gaming session, I would plug in my USB head phones/mic into the USB port. On some occasions, I would get a spark that would cause the desktop PC to reboot. My USB head set has a plastic handle which I use to insert it into the USB port, so I'm not touching the metal.

I guess I probably should take off my shoes and walk on the carpet before playing? Maybe ground myself to the electrical outlet screw before inserting the USB connection?

I've seen that happen with USB devices. Some plastics can still conduct static electricity. You can try touching the connector to the case first to discharge it. May or may not work through the paint though.
