I guess if you have a bunch of what look like $$ 2 cyl RC engines lying around....

Those are fiberglass props and when they break, they are like like flying knives. As a rule, we RC modelers always try to stay out of the arc of the propeller in case it breaks. In that rig, HIS WHOLE BODY is in the arc of the propellers.
For some idea of the power of those engines, those look like the size engine they put in 50 pound model planes. They are about the same horsepower as a home quality chainsaw engine. Each can produce 35 pounds of thrust or more depending.

I have wondered why nobody has tried build a quad using a single engine then use the tail props off of helicopters. then you can use the cyclic instead of RPM adjustment which would allow a much faster feedback loop.
