This is exactly what I'd like to have for the new house.

I really like how utilitarian it is. The only changes I'd make is adding a keyboard tray and more shelves. If you wanted to you could build the desk to mount your main rig's motherboard recessed in the desk with a glass cover.

I'm pretty tall so I don't like to use keyboard trays. Matter of fact I removed the tray from my current desk.
I like it as is if I could find someone to build it. What I've been leaning towards buying is something like this:
I like open concept. I don't want a desk like I have now with drawers and a hutch. IThere's a standalone rolling drawer set that goes with it. I was even thinking of getting two of these desks and making an open U with them to achieve something like the desk above.

Bob, I have the Bedford modular set from Pottery barn and they work well. The tabletops just sit on the drawer bases, so you can mix and match if you get creative with Brackets. I built a corner unit with 1 side extended longer than the other. It aint cheap, but I picked these up years ago during a big furniture sale so only spent like 1200 bucks on 2 corner desks and 3 smaller extention desks. Might be worth a look for you.

Very nice setup. My wife and I share a small office where there isn't a lot of room to build out. I have other space I could build something in, but I enjoy yakking with her while we use the computers.

Thank you.

Yea, my office is big enough, it's what is typically the "formal" living room, that my wife's and my son's desk is actually on the opposite side of the room. It's also an Ikea Galant, just a 5' table top.

I finally got to go all out on my office when we bought our house here in Georgia. I went with the Ikea Galant system (before they fucked it all up and switched to rounded corners, essentially killing their entire modular desk market).
It's 8.5' on the front and 10' on the side. Cabling needs to be done, but I'll make sure I do it cleaner when I move it to another room in the house. The shelving is from container store which matched up pretty good, not exactly black, but matches a bit to the style. I'm just missing the under the shelf lighting, which I bought, just haven't installed them. As big as it is, I still manage to clutter it

Yes very nice setup! Question - can you give me more information on the chair. I'm always finding it difficult to get a good comfortable chair to set for long periods of time. Just sitting in one for a few minutes does not cut it. You almost need to use one for a few days to make a determination if it will not hurt your ass over the long haul.

I was going to ask that too. Need a new chair, and before I buy a used Aeron (fantastic chairs but expensive as fuck), seeing if I can find a good alternative.

LOL, I'm planning on doing something similar too. I'll have lots of shelves though. So much stuff.

I had the same issue and it would get so bad that eventually I wouldn't be able to sit at all so I'd end up taking Advil and laying in bed for a few days until the soreness went away. About 8 years ago I got fed up with the cheap Office Depot chairs and decided to get a real chair. I tried different chairs and ultimately went with Humanscale, specifically the Freedom Headrest chair. The chair is just amazing. One thing I did was upgrade it to the extended arms (default ones are too short) and I also went with the Gel pad for the seat, that's really what has saved my ass all these years. It comes with like a 10 year warranty. The company really stands behind their product. I had one of the arms break and they sent me a replacement. Even the fabric outside the Gel pad got messed up and they sent me a while new seat. Now the not so good part, unless you really value your ass and also can see how buying cheap chairs every few years ends up costing more than a one time purchase of quality office chair. With all the upgrades, the chair runs around $1200. I will say I was lucky to know someone that was able to get me one with their employee discount, but before finding that out I was already committed to buying it, so I would have easily paid the retail price for it. The chair will easily last 20 years, so factor in how many chairs you'd go through in that time frame. If you want to sit in one and check it out, see if there is a Relax the Back store near you.

I have been thinking about buying an Aeron chair. I used one for a week in a high-end hotel in Seattle once and I loved it. There's a Relax the Back store in Orlando an hour away - I'll have to check out that Freedom Task Chair sometime.
Right now I have two Hon Muscatine commercial office chairs, and they are extremely comfortable . I got a great deal on these. These chairs probably cost $500 or $600 each originally, and I bought them both for $200 (used in great condition, maybe used 2 years and then put in storage for a year). Bought them off a client 4 years ago who was downsizing their office due to the housing bust. At the time I had just injured my back in a fall and because of sciatic pain, for a year I found it excruciating to sit for more than 15 minutes at a time in any kind of normal Office Depot type chair. When I did IT work at their office I loved sitting in their chairs and finally asked them one day where they bought them from. That's when they told me they had a bunch in storage and would be happy to sell me one. The owner had them and a bunch of commercial desks piled up in his garage and was desperate to get rid of some of it. I ended up buying two of the chairs.
Mine are the same as the one in this photo. They have something like 6 different adjustments (notice all the levers): lumbar, the distance between the seat and the back support, the angle of the seat, the angle of the back support, the height of the arm rests (individually!), the angle (in and out) of the arm rests (also individually!) and the height of the chair of course. The Arm rests are great, I can set them for the exact height of my keyboard and I angle the left one in a bit, and angle the right one out a bit for my mouse arm. I'm a big guy (240 pounds 4 years ago, 220 now) and I've been flopping into these seats for 4 years and never killed the pneumatic piston. Material is strong as heck and hasn't torn anywhere yet.
I use the workstation chair more than the one on the gaming PC and the cushion started getting a little thin so I got a gel cushion to put on top of it. Got one of those WonderGel Extreme cushions from Bed Bath & Beyond and put a pillow case on it. Very comfy.
Hon doesn't make the Muscatine model like mine anymore, but from looking in their catalog it looks like this is the comparable model today:

A lot of small businesses buy Hon chairs so it's worth looking on Craig's list.

I had a Aeron when I was in FL, Bob may remember me carting it to the LAN's. Best chair I ever sat in. I was devastated when it died after 11 years (gas cylinder broke, sudden drop of my fat ass broke the base and tore the material of the seat, out of warranty and cost as much to fix as a new one almost).
Been on so-so chairs since I dont sit at home that much, but as I get older, my fuckit attitude is increasing about buying another one. Nice deals on used ones every so often.
