Building a 32-Thread Xeon Monster PC for Less Than the Price of a Haswell-E Core i7

Post by FlyingPenguin »

Apparently there's a glut of these monster 8 core, 32 thread Xeon CPUs on the market and they can be had for as little as $70 used or $135 new (for a CPU that cost $1000 18 months ago!).

A lot of people are building 4K video editing workstations around them.

Hmmm.... My 1st Gen Core i7 workstation is getting a little long in the tooth. I don't game with it anymore, but I DO use it for transcoding videos quite a lot. I'll have to consider this...

This is perfect. I'm looking to build a VMWare box so I can run a few VMs on it. This would work nicely I think. Slap a bunch of RAM in it and it's good to go.
Nice find.

If you seaech on Amazon for that CPU, you also come up with refurb Lenovo S30 workstations. Nice looking machines for the money.
