Just noticed this on my IBM 45gig 75GXP that it is jumpered for 15 heads. Thats the way it came shipped to me. It was OEM so no documentation telling me to change it. I haven't had all that many problems with it, but I have had a few. Could it be because it should be jumpered for 16 heads?? I see on this sticker on the top of the drive it says this:
CHS: 16383/16/63
I'm asuming that the "H" could stand for heads and the 16 means it should infact be 16 instead of 15. The other letters and #s are beyond me

Oh btw, I'm about to do a low level format... Just lookin for the util of IBMs site, so if you could tell me this before I do the format and possibley screw everything up I would really appreciate it!

it looks like it should be set to 16 heads. why are you doing a low level format ? unless you have a few bad clusters, you shouldn't really have to do that.

Well, I was going to do a low level, just so I could be sure that nothing on the hard-drive was screwing me up... BUT I couldn't find the util so o'well.. What would be the difference between 16 and 15 heads?? I keep getting all these windows protection error with 16 heads selected. Dunno if it does it with 15, cuz I haven't gotten windows installed again yet

really what you need to do is go to IBM Hard Drives web site and look up your specs. it will tell you what the jumper settings should be.

I have 2 IBM HDs, on both the "H" in CHS on label is 16, both are jumpered for 16 heads and work perfectly. I had an older IBM 6.4 GB, the "H" said 15 on the label, it was jumpered for 15 heads and also worked great.
I'm positive that the 15 or 16 "H" on the label indicates where the jumper should be set.
