“The Government of Spain will not applaud those who set the world on fire just because they show up with a bucket.” - Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez
I've seen many of these, certainly nice to see. What I've seen more common of, are the mult outlets which you would plug into a standard out let which normally has like 2 USB and 3 outlets.
I suppose in this day in age it would be more convenient, though it would be good to see one with 4 USB ports. Haven't come across any myself as of yet.
These may not work so great for phones though. As they might default to .5A thus a much slower charge.
Actually Zyfer, I was going to post a 4 port USB outlet, but it seemed over the top. But if I was going to design a house from scratch, where ever my keys/wallet/phone/ipod was going to be sitting for the night, I'd probably mount one of these. Right now I have 3 devices with USB chargers all in one place next to my wallet (phone, iPod, Bluetooth headset). These are also all 2.1 amps to accommodate iPads:

Well, you can install any of those anywhere at any time now, no need for new construction. IMO, it's easier to just use an AC adapter as they can be used anywhere.
Three AC adapters gets cluttered, and the cables tend to fall behind the dresser unless you tape them down. Ideally I'd want the USB outlets located at table height behind the dresser I put all my stuff (wallet, keys, phone, pager, ipod, BT headset etc).
While installing a GEM box in drywall after the fact is not hard, I'm really planning ahead for the layout of a new home.

On Reno's link, read the reviews. One stated that the receptacle would not fit in the standard 2" depth box. He has to install a 2.5 inch box. He stated that it was the same size as a GFI receptacle.

But what if USB later gets replaced by yet another type and thus obsolete?
Apple connectors and phone
land line outlets too as examples. Our house (built in '72) has obsolete phone jacks in every room.
I'd prefer an extension adaptor with multiple USB outlets. Must be available?
We JUST got everyone on USB consistently. Even iPods and iPhones charge from USB power bricks.
I don't think that's going to change anytime soon, now that we finally got everyone on one standard.

kind of like adding rj-45 wall outlets and going wireless in place of them ~
even better one I did in my livingroom. I installed a speaker adapter so to send sound from my stereo to my spa room wall speakers.then we rearranged the living room . for me to use the outlet I have to run speaker wires under the floor and back up under the adaptor. or showing along the floor boards between the stereo and the outlet. I should of put a outlet in every wall. bought a stereo audio central control box in the basement . then it wouldn't of been such a pain. but it had cost a couple hundred bucks or more. by the time I bought all the outlets.centrol hub and extra 16 gage speaker wire.and the time spent designing the wire layout . it was time /costly just installing the right and left speakers. for the way its set up now.

RJ45 and ethernet is far from obsolete. Something is to be said for a stable, reliable high speed network connection. I had multiple cat6 run to every room when they were building my house and it is great having gigE in every room. No more saturated wifi...
After a bit of searching I found this AC powered 7 USB Hub (as an example) which can also charge Ipads. It's also portable, unlike a built in wall outlet. Has good reviews too.
Oh I use something like that now. But I'd still like the elegant clean look of USB outlets. And if they go the way of the Do-Do then you can replace it with a regular outlet.
