New Hard Drive

Post by CaterpillarAssassin »

Not sure who to buy these days for a hard drive. Need it mostly for movie storage, so speed is not a big factor. I want something reliable, however. I'm in the air between the samsung and western digital green.

I would go with the Western Digital Black:

These carry a 5 year warranty.

You show the same drive in both links. WD 2TB
I have used the Green WD drives in both 1TB and 2TB and have had great success. The blacks are more expensive with a longer warranty and run hotter. It all depends on your application if you ask me. I like the green if you are not looking for speed and just large data storage. I have mine in a mirror raid.

I have always been a WD fan . and had great experience with them.

I just bought this Samsung for an external hard drive. I hope it's reliable. All my hard drives previously have been either Seagate or Hitachi

Currently run all Samsungs in my main rig (5TB worth & two of which are the one that MAC mentioned). All have been good to me so far (one is over a year old). Also Samsung seems to be at the top of most of the reviews for both reliability & performance (the one mentioned above is currently 2nd place on Newegg for 2TB drives with 1100 reviews... first place only has 6 reviews so far). They had a firmware issue at the beginning of the year, but that's well taken care of now.

Hitachi on the other hand has done me wrong a few times so far. So I avoid them.

IMO, I'd rather have a pair of Samsungs in RAID-1 than one of the WD blacks for pretty close to the same price.

The Eco green samsung that you linked was the one I meant to link. I've heard the same, that samsung is one of the best now. Newegg has the Wd green green 2tb for $69.99 now for labor day. Tough decision.

The Samsung is the same price at Mwave.com too (used them quite a few times with good results).

or if you're feeling lucky, they've got a refurb of it for $59
