I bought a Sansa micro mp3 player with 4 gigs of internal space. The device allows you to insert a micro flash card on the side giving you 16 gigs more. XP sees both in My Computer and I'm able to view the 2 existing folders, but I can't add any new folders to the flash drive. Normally I can right-click on a drive and select create new folder.

I even removed the flash drive and inserted it all by itself (with adapter) and its not recognized by XP. It only works if its in the Sana mp3 player. XP shows the internal memory and now the external.

Is there a tool to allow you to add a folder?

I doubt it's an XP issue per-se. More likely it's an issue with your card reader.

I've been through enough card readers to know that whenever they come out with a bigger flash card, it breaks older readers.

I agree, I've had nothing but trouble with card readers.

Same here. The other day the USB driver for one I had got corrupted (I still don't know why) and was causing my Win 7 boot to take ~5 minutes. I deleted the device from the Device Manager and unplugged it. Now everything is fine.

We even have problems with the buit in card reager on the Wife's laptop. When inporting pictures, it will say it can't read but if you hit try again it reads it just fine. Very annoying when you're trying to inport 300+ pictures.

I wonder if a card reader that worked off IDE or SATA would be less troublesome than the ones that work from the USB bus.

After hearing all this, I wonder if using Ubuntu would work instead. Jesus, all I want to do is create a damn folder. There are already 2 folders there.

Just pickup a new card reader - I recommend the Sonys as they tend to be very reliable.

Buy it somewhere that has a good return policy in case that doesn't solve the problem and you want to return it.

I don't really have a lot of trouble with card readers, it's just that every time they double the size of the cards, it seems they have to use a new technology and it doesn't work on older readers. For instance when they went to bigger than 1Gb Compact Flash, they would work on older readers. SD has gone through several incarnations that have not been reverse compatible.

2gb seems to be my bane currently.

You were right. The brand new card reader that came with the flash drive was bad. Used another one I had and no problems.
