I just acquire (garbage picked to be exact) a HP Compaq Presario SR1620NX:

Specs:

Sempron 3400+ (2GHz) Socket 939 I beleive.

512MB RAM (DDR SDRAM)

No Hard Drive.

No PSU.

Do you all know what the max cpu this thing can take?

Is this worth putting it into service or should I put this thing back on the curb.

Motherboard specs: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docu ... ct=1127351

Specifically:
CPU/Processor

Socket: 939
Supports AMD Athlon 64 X2 (up to 4800+) and Sempron (up to 3200+) processors

If you can find one, ebay is your best bet.

Thanks, I'll go hunting for parts next (cpu & ram).

I have a spare HDD & PSU in my parts drawer.

If anyone has any of these (cpu & ram) i am interested in buying thanks.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat, sort of. I picked up a decent S939 board that had blown caps, and an Athlon 64 3800+. Replaced the caps, picked up 4GB of DDR RAM, a PSU and a hard drive. Now all I need it a case and video card :P

Just pulled & cleaned the cpu and its definitely a Sempr0n 3400+, weird. Maybe I'll just keep the setup as-is but throw in some more ram and make it a net-browser for my garage.

Not really worth getting the S939 X2 type processors. There were few made & they are in high demand & priced accordingly (if you haven't already noticed). I'd just get it up to 2gb of RAM & call it good. Maybe if you find someone who is selling a super cheap 4000+ processor, I'd swap it in. It'll make for a fine browser & in actuality even with what's in it, it'll game pretty well with a decent video card so long as you're not doing high resolutions & or super new games (I played Oblivion on a similar processor with a Nvidia 7900gs).

If you're just going to web surf or if you watch a lot of video online, get a newer video card like the HD4350 for cheap ($20-30) so it'll offload the video processing.

Update: Loaded Windows 7 and it runs fairly smooth. I slapped in an old Maxtor 300GB IDE HD I had laying around. Could use some ram but works just fine as a web browser. Not bad for a garbage picked PC. Oh and by the way the reason the would be previous owner chucked this PC is because apparently someone moves the little power supply switch over to the 240V selection and it would not turn on. I moved it back to 120V and viola!

Haa, I love it when those come into the shop. "Well it worked fine, then my nephew used it and..." Yeahh... those are fun

Got mine up and running tonight too. Got an old crap eMachines mATX case, stuck the (HP) motherboard inside, 2GB of DDR, (one of my sticks was bad) an ATI Radeon x600 Pro, couple of 100GB IDE drives, tossed Windows XP on it... not a bad little machine. Gonna toss some games on it tomorrow, see what that little card can do.
