Hard drive Quality

What ever happened to quality?

Seagate used to be the best when it came to HD quality. Now? In the crapper. Almost every time I have bought seagate drives at least 1 of them is bad. A couple years ago I bought 4 500gb seagate drives. 2 of them were DOA. The other 2 I have no idea as they weren't for me. Had a 200gb seagate drive around that same time that failed after 2 years. Sure, drives fail. So I RMA'd it. 2 months later? The replacement died. RMA'd that, and bought a new WD drive. I'd just let the 200gb sit since, and i guess it still works but thats not saying much. WD drive status? Running like a champ.

Now I bought a 1TB seagate drive, and guess what? Click of death. Accesses just fine, but makes clunk noises every 30 seconds. ANNOYED.

I guess they decided they could drop quality when reducing warranty from 5 years to 3.

Of course WD isn't the best these days either. Have a RAID 1 at work with 2 WD "Enterprise" drives. After 8 months, corrupting data. Lets see how long the 2 new ones last.

Anyone else having the same experiences?

The last Seagate drive that I bought was back in December 2007. Came with a 5 yr warranty. Still works and its in my main rig. Its only a 500 gig size.

The drives that I really like are SCSI. Never had a single issue with any of them.

I've got plenty of Seagate that work, however, I have a number that have failed as well. Well short of the 5 year warranty. Honestly, I could care less how long the warranty is so long as I get a good 3 years out of the drive. Sadly, I have trouble trusting anyone anymore. That said, Samsung has been making major strides & is currently my go to manufacturer.
