I don't know what it is. It will work sometimes and not others. Technical support is no help, they told me to set it up to get an IP automatically, and change my computer name, and my workgroup witch messed up my home network. Anyways, I have reinstalled Win98/Win2k and am just starting all over with configuring it. For the moment cable is working, but I don't know how long that will last... Here is my current system specs, and they will stay exactly like this untill I have it working perfectly. :)

Abit Kt7A-Raid
Thunderbird 1.1ghz @ 1.1ghz (does 1.266, but don't want overclocking to be the problem)
256megs of Micron pc133
Radeon 64meg DDR vivo, clocked @ default
Awe 64 isa soundcard. :( <----Bah!!!
Linkseys network everywhere fast nc100 v2 nic card
Ibm 45gig GXP
5x dvd
8/4/32 cd writer

I have the nic in the second pci slot down. Ok my information that I have from the cable people is:

IP address: 65.7.5.161
Defualt gateway address: 65.7.5.1
Netmast address: 255.255.255.0
Broadcast address: (its blank?!?!)
Primary DNS server address: 24.5.68.33
Secondary DNS server address: 24.5.68.34
Subdomain Address: cospgs1.co.home.com
Login: beliefsystems.temp.2 (I only use this for e-mail correct??)
DNS name: Cy991065-A
Nail server name: mail
Directory Sever name: directory
News server name: news
Web proxy server name: http://proxy:8080

Now can anyone tell me some HAVE TOs for that information other whise you might get the problems I've been having??? Cuz I am totally not getting this :( TIA

But then why in the world would all the lights on the modem stay on except for the activity light?? And sometimes the activity light stays on too... Like it will start flashing when I'm starting up but then I can't use it once windows is loaded.. :( This is ultra sux0r. The guy on tech support said that if my computer name was "Frost" instead of the big gay # that they wanted me to put there that maybe the server couldn't see my computer all the time or some crap like that. Well I put the big gay # in there and it made no difference. This is really getting old!!!

The modem is going to flash when you start it up. The NIC is testing the connection or just trying to connect. Its sending a signal..but getting no responce apparently.

What OS are you using? Your computer name HAS to be the big number they give you. That is your Machine account (on their servers) and has to have your name the same to be able to talk to their servers. If it is "frost" and they dont have a machine account setup by the name "frost" then it wont reply.

First thing is first. Take out the 2nd NIC and only install the first NIC. Get the cable modem actually UP AND RUNNING before you setup a whole home network.

Is this company @home??? If they are..when you call, ask to speak to a "2nd level tech person". The entry level ones are dumber than rocks.

Frost, you mentioned something about your home network. How are you running that? Is that through a Gateway/Router like the Netgear RT-314 or are you using ICS? If you are using a router that could also be your problem. And personally I would setup the pc with a Sstatic IP. It's easy enough and you have all the info you need already. I've been using static IP's on @Home for years now with no issues.

Also, how long is it down? Will a simple refresh fix it or a system reboot? You could try not using the proxy too. I like mine off completely.

Proxy is off, and I am running on my cable at the moment! :) I don't ahve the second nic installed right now, I just did a complete format. Right now I am only running Win98, but have space left unformatted that I'm going to put Win2k on after I get Win98 working well. Could this have been my problem!?!?!?!?!?! I noticed that My IP# is 65.7.5.161, and my gateway address that I was using was 65.7.5.1 Well when I looked at this other paper the gateway # was the same as my Ip # (65.7.5.161) so I'm using that now and its working fine. Also I haven't renamed my computer to that big # yet :) so I guess I'll do that and maybe things will stay working! :p Thanx guys!!!

Your Gateway and IP have to be different. If you have them the same that is oneof your problems. Also, you must use not only the long name they give you, but the workgroup should be @Home or whatever they set it up as. Try pinging your own IP address. You might have a bad NIC. Seen it happen. And if possible, call them now while it's down to see if they can pinpoint something.

I just had a similar problem with @home after reformatting and reinstalling my OS. I hadn't done it in about a year and a half, and it seemed to fix the other problems I had had..
but anyway, like an idiot I didn't write my settings down, so I called their tech support to get them back. I go to LAN parties occasionally, and found (atleast where I am) that the workgroup really doesn't matter.. it's making sure you got the right identification for your computer name.
Anyway, the first tech support dood I talked to said he couldn't figure out what was wrong and referred me to tier 2 support.. but instead I verified all my settings again and called tier 1 back.. I got a different tech this time, and verified my settings with him again..
come to find out the first dumbass gave me the wrong ID for my computer.. that and it has to be all in caps..
hope this helps.. I know your pain..

@home tech support sucks arse. I swear by it :) I've called dozens of times for my pathetically slow download/upload speeds and spiking pings in games and they have yet to help me. They've even been out here twice and it hasn't been fixed.

Some days are diamonds, some days are rocks. In other words, some days are good, other days are terrible. Sadly, more bad ones than good ones. Seems everytime I write them an email b!tchin' about how the performance sucks, then it perks up. I've narrowed it down to either the cable running from the house to the telephone pole outside (doubtful) or them and how they have me configured. It's all I can think of.

What is sad is my friend can't get more than 15kb/s when downloading from me. Nor can I get any more than that when downloading from him. Yet we both can achieve speeds up to 3-400kb/s from servers on the net. And he only lives 3 doors down! Comcast is just scrwey man.

Hipnotic, the reason you can't get more than 15k when downloading from your friend(or vice versa) is because of the upload cap. All @Home connections are limited to 15k max upload. So no matter how fast you can theoretically download, you can only get it as fast as he can upload it. Which at this time is a disgraceful 15k. I'm not sure how, but for about 8 months I was not capped on the upload and used to send files near 80k. It was so sweet. Then one day people started telling me my connection sucked and ever since it's never even hit 15.1k hehe. Nothing we can do for the time being.

How in the hell would I ping myself?? :) I have some other nics around here... Should I try one of those? I think I am going to here in a sec! :)

typing ping 65.7.5.161 at a DOS prompt will ping your NIC
typing ping 65.7.5.1 at a DOS prompt will ping your Gateway
you can also run a trace route to any IP to check your pings and see where the problems if any start.

Type tracert http://www.yahoo.com or any other site or IP addy. don't use the http:// part though. It was added by the BBS script.

Topshelf - they must have just recently put a cap on it. They must have just neglected to tell us. How convenient. I used to get 80kb uploads and crap too. Now I only get 15kb. Sounds exactly like your situation.

Though, I didn't call comacast because of my poor upload speed. I've never complained about that. IT's the inconsistant spiking pings in games. No matter what server or time of day. Some days are better than others though.
