I ordered one of these and just installed it in my new rig as I neglected to order my rig with a card reader: http://www.newegg.com/Product/NewProduc ... -_-Product



I really like it. The bright colorful faceplate makes it VERY easy to tell the slots from each other - a blessing for me since I'm generally in a dark room.

A little pricey but it reads just about every card I've ever heard of including microSD which you usually need an adapter for.

It does show up as five separate drive letters not as one, but it also does allow more than one card to be connected at a time. I also appreciate the extra USB jack. Construction feels very solid - not surprising as this is intended to be used in a camera store kiosk computer. Most other card readers feel very flimsy to me - as if it wouldn't take much to break a connector.

As the reviews say, the LED is absurdly bright but a little touch from a black magic marker toned it down, and the blue LED matches the blue lighting on my case nicely.

Nice. I haven't seen too many that will read the Pro/Duo Sony cards.

Huh, I thought I posted a while ago, but I guess I backed out before posting reply.

I just never was able to find use for these. Since I can just plug in my camera/MP3 player straight to the computer without having to remove the card. I can see the use if you juggle multiple cards though (photographer). What the industry really needs to come out with is one of these with retractable USB/firewire cords with all the different heads (jeez, why couldn't they just have 2 different USB dongles). Or even better, a desk mounted version.

Normalicy: I always advise my clients against connecting their camera's via USB, and to use a card reader instead. For one thing it's a MUCH faster transfer rate.

At least most cameras act just like a flash drive nowadays, but the ones that really annoy me is the cameras that can only download files if you install their software which is often major bloatware. Kodak is the worst. Install Kodak Easy Share on a 4 year old computer and it usually just chokes.

For me personally it's a bigger hassle to fish out the camera cable - much easier to just pop out the stick and pop it in the card reader.

OK, I can understand if you had to install bloatware for the camera (I'd forgot that some require that). That would even make me get a reader. However, my transfer speeds are pretty peppy it seems. Peppy enough that I haven't cared. I can transfer 256mb of stuff in about 30 seconds. About the same as pulling the card out & put it into a reader. As for cables, I currently have this popping out from between my monitors.


Never an issue getting a cable. Which is convenient since I seem to have at least one thing for every single connector on there.

Cool cable. Where did you get that? I always have to search for a cable when I need it.

Saw it on Amazon, but bought it on ebay. It was about the same price as replacing my missing micro B cable, so I jumped. It's been more handy than I expected. It's actually seen as a hub by the computer, not a splitter (which considering, is smart).

is that something i can use w/my laptop?

i ask because the rear USB port is always in use w/a laptop cooler; the 2 on the side { 1 port on top of the other }, well, ~ when i use my card reader in the top port i cannot fit my USB flash memory stick @ the same time in the bottom port { they are too close together }.

i would really like to transfer pics/vids directly from the card reader to my flash drive, but instead i have to 1st transfer everything to my laptop, then remove the reader, insert the flash drive and copy from laptop to flash drive.
it is a pain in the neck.
so, i really only would need something that would provide addtnl regular USB2 ports.

Yes, it would work, but it sounds like for you, I'd just get a USB hub.

Forewarning, if you buy from meritline, they ship from China, so it's usually about 2 weeks ship time. But they're reliable & I've made dozens of purchases from them (super cheap HDMI cables, or any cables for that matter).
