ROUND ROCK, Texas (AP) - Dell Inc. said Wednesday it will close a desktop computer manufacturing plant in Winston-Salem, N.C., by the end of January.

The computer maker said 905 people will be laid off, with around 600 to be let go next month. The plant was opened in 2005.
In June, Dell sold its Lebanon, Tenn., remanufacturing plant to Genco. In January, Dell said the company would move its Ireland manufacturing operations to Poland, a process that is still ongoing.

Dell has plants in Miami, Nashville, Austin, Texas, Brazil, Ireland, Poland, China, Malaysia and India. It also partners with other manufacturers to make certain products.

i like dell but it seems to me they are sending all there work over sea's and saying hell with the american work force , but keep buying are products so we can keep cheaper workers working. you are just to costly for are bottom line to employ.

EVERYONE outsources. When it costs more to build something here than overseas then a public company's responsibility is to the stock holders.

As for Dell, they continue to build desktop PCs here. They outsourced laptops to the far east a few years ago. The basic laptop bodies are build over there and then the accessories are installed here.

Of course ALL the components in ALL PCs are built overseas now, and have been for a long time.

Dell's problem is they worry too much about "catching up" with HP. Screw HP. HP makes crappy products (their home grade stuff anyway) and loads them up with bloatware and then (I suspect) underclocks them to reduce helpdesk issues. I would prefer Dell continue making a quality product and continue offering quality on site service. They have a dedicated following in small and large businesses, and that's where they need to keep the focus.

yeah, unfortunately, if everything was made in the US, no one would buy it. why? because the cost to manufacture would skyrocket, the pc costs for consumers would then drastically increase....and then no one will buy from dell because it's "too expensive". then, dell would no longer exist...that would equal more than 900 jobs lost...and soon total chaos. dogs and cats living together...mass hysteria!

Keep in mind Dell is basically scaling back it's US manufacturing due to slow sales.

They still assemble PCs here. Not practical to have them assembled overseas like the laptops (not yet anyway) since they specialize in customized builds.

What this does, though, is increase the shipping time. During Dell's hey-day they built a LOT of assembly plants to reduce shipping time.

A little less of an issue now since people are now used to ordering over the internet and modern shipping usually gets a PC in your hands in a 3 - 5 days under the slowest method once it gets sent out the factory door.
