Choppy CoD 4 Experience

So I was talking to someone yesterday about CoD 4 on PC. He was telling me how CoD 4 was really choppy for him even on low settings. He has a Q6600, 3 GB RAM, 8600GT 256MB, and Vista.

This sounded really strange to me since I was able to run CoD 4 smoothly on my old rig which was a P4 2.4GHz, 768 MB RAM, and Radeon X1600 512MB on Windows XP.

What's the problem here? Is it his card's video memory that was making it choppy? He told me that if he overclocked his Q6600 then it wouldn't be choppy. Wouldn't overclocking be unnecessary though considering he has a Q6600 and it's only CoD 4?

Could be a lot of things. The latest drivers gave me a lot of chop until I disabled VSync. I usually prefer having VSync enabled. I needed the latest drivers for full support for Batman Arkham Asylum though, so I'll live with it until the next driver is released.

I've also seen XFire cause serious visual lag in COD4, so I don't use it anymore.

Overclocking the CPU isn't going to do anything. He already has more than enough CPU. I play COD4 on a Q6600. I know plenty of people playing COD4 on older dual core Athlon64 processors.

His vid card is more likely to be holding him back, but it's an adequate vid card if he's not trying to push it too hard. I wouldn't be running any FSAA with that card for instance.

So some suggestions: Disable VSync if it's on. Turn off FSAA. If he hasn't rebooted lately, do so. Turn off any background apps, including Xfire.

I would try uninstalling the video card drivers and installing the latest.

Wait until the price drops. I got it free with my GTX275. While a lot of reviewers are giving the game perfect scores, it's far from perfect. The graphics with physix acceleration are amazing. The voice acting is supurb with Mark Hamill leading as the Joker. The storyline is also very well done. The level design and gameplay could have been better in my opinion. Whoever designed the levels was a big fan of Half Life because whenever there is a locked door, there's always a vent to crawl through. There also seems to always be a gargoyle handy whenever you need to hide and drop in. The AI in the game is so-so and could be approved. I personally don't like the fighting system. I feel like I'm not really in control of what Batman is doing. You click the hell out of the left mouse button and he does stuff. For boss battles, you have to jump to avoid a charge. There's no button to make Batman jump. When you need to jump across something, you run and he jumps on his own.

I personally think the game was a bit over-hyped by reviewers. They seem to be overwhelmed by one aspect of the game to see the obvious flaws.

If this game hadn't come with my card, I wouldn't have bought it due to Games for Windows Live. Unless ther is a work-around I don't know about, you are forced to creat a GFWL account so you can save your game. As a pc gamer, I think this is BS.

I suggest getting the demo before buying: http://www.batmanarkhamasylum.com/demo

I'm liking it, but I agree there's a "disconnect" between your controls and what Batman does in combat. I'm basically wacking buttons and tactics goes out the window.

The fun part is stalking henchmen and figuring out how to take them down (eg:glide down and kick them in the face, silently approach from behind and choke them, jump down as they pass under you and string them up, blow up an adjoining wall, etc).

I also am disappointed that you have to login to Games for Windows Live to save your game. It's obvious that it's a thinly veiled anti-piracy system. Why should I have to login to a service to play a SINGLE PLAYER game?

Visually the game is stunning.

It's not my usual kind of game but after playing the demo I was at Best Buy the day they released it.

I would recommend downloading the demo first and giving it a try.

I personally don't play games that were made for consoles on the PC anymore for that reason. I always feel like something is disconnect & that the perspective is also off. I can see how the games would play well on a console, but it sure just never translates well. Even games that I really like a lot on console just suck on PC.
