i've been using a sansa e200 series for years...the thing had the best battery life of anything i've ever used...and it's even a replaceable battery. but, it finally died when the headphone port started to loosen, making the audio cut in/out unless i would hold the headphone jack to one side. not too convenient. i imagine it could be repaired, if someone would want to rip into it and resolder something.

anyway, newegg had the sansa "clip" on sale for $20 last week...ordered it and it's awesome. 2GB...no software needed...bright display...and it's TINY. perfect for workouts, which is usually the only time i use the player. only drawback is the battery cannot be (easily) removed or replaced...so hopefully it lasts.

here is the 1GB version:

I use an old Samsung 512Mb player for audio books because it uses an AA battery (and gets 40+ hours on it) and also does not use ID3 tags at all - it just shows you the file name. Easier to manage audio books that way. I mainly use it at the gym because it's very small.

I have two Microsoft Zune players. An old 30Gb Gen1 that I use around the house for listening to music, podcasts and radio, and a Gen2 120Gb I use in the car.

I have the 8gig version of that and have never looked back. Battery life is huge. Wallyworld used to have the 8 gig for $50.
