Lenovo desktop USB problem

Post by nitro237 »

I have a Lenovo desktop computer, about a year old, running XP Pro. I put my usb jump drive in, I can her the chimes where the computer recognizes it, the light on the jump drive starts flashing, but I can't see the drive when I open "My Computer" .

I tried acouple of different jump drives , same thing.

Any ideas?

Make sure the PC isn't already using the drive letter that would normally be used for the drives. Right click on "My Computer" click "Manage", then go to "Disk Management" look for the jump drive on the right. If you see it, change it's drive letter to something like "R". Hope that fixes it for you ;)

Open the Device Manager and then expand the "Universal serial bus controllers" section. When you plug in the USB stick, it should appear in the USB section without any errors. Then check the "Disk Drives" section. It should show up in there without an error also.

Have you tried any other USB devices?

I have seen situations where a USB port will no longer recognize a flash drive but it sees mice & printers just fine. Usually it's an OS issue. Sometimes it's a hardware issue.

Try booting into Safe Mode and see if it'll recognize the flash drive. If it does then you know it's a driver issue of some kind.

Worst case if it's a hardware issue, buy a USB PCI card.
