I need a mouse for gaming

Post by CrazyBones »

I'd like to start out by making sure I'm correct on this. Laser is better than optical, right?

I need a good gaming mouse for first person shooters, specifically CounterStrike: Source. Right now I'm using a crappy ball mouse so I'm at a bit of a disadvantage. :lol

I've heard the Logitech G5 and Razer Lachesis are excellent mouses for my needs.

IMO, today pretty much ANY cordless two button mouse will be fine for shooters where all you need it for is forward and fire.

I'm using the Logitech MX518 Optical Gaming Mouse. Works great. Lots of programmable buttons.

The whole optical/laser thing is pretty much nonsense. The important thing is the resolution.

The big difference between regular mice and "gaming" mice is that the gaming mice have adjustable resolution. I don't really use this feature, but I can set the resolution separately for the desktop and each game, and even change it on the fly if I have the buttons mapped for it. Some of the really fancy gaming mice (not this one) also have removable lead weights to make the mouse as heavy as you like.

The 518 is a big mouse (I have a big hand) and I find it very comfortable.

It's a wired mouse - I'm done with wireless mice for gaming. Serious gamers don't use wireless.

Reasonably priced and there's a rebate on it at NewEgg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6826104178

I have a MX1000 GL and IMO, it's not ideal for gaming and acts up more often than I like. Matter of fact, I should replace it. Many times I'm fraggin' away and the fire button seems stick and the only way to stop it is by hitting the ~ key.

The Logitech G5 is pretty much the standard. I have the G9 & really, I ended up liking the feel of the G5 better anyhow. Like FP said, laser isn't important. I prefer extra buttons & decent resolution. Also like FP said, you really can't do any wireless mouse unless you consider gaming to be Peggle.

I have played bf2 a lot with a wired optical mouse and a wireless laser mouse (MX610) and I can honestly say I can play a lot better with the plain ole Dell wired optical mouse. Not sure why but quick pointing and shooting is much smoother than with a wireless laser mouse. Im thinking about buying one like FP so I can have my extra buttons back.

Ego: I used an MX1000 for 7 months. I liked the shape but I definitely felt a certain lag or "disconnect" due to the wireless. It affected my game.

The MX518 is shaped just like the MX1000 so it feels good in my hand, and now I feel an instantaneous response that's just not there with a wireless mouse.

I really should go buy another one and throw it in the closet so I have a backup whenever the present one wears out. With my luck it'll be discontinued by then.

I'd agree. I know that mine isn't as good for gaming as a mouse should be and SO, I'm getting the MX518. You convinced me.

Didn't see a rebate at Newegg. Checked locally first, nothing.

Love my Logitech MX Revolution, which I got for free. Had a MX700 that started dieing. Then I discovered they carried a 5 year warranty. Woot.

I bought a MX518 yesterday. Its not too bad. I got big hands so the right/left clicks are a bit short and its got kinda annoying edge on the right side but it is fast and the adjustable buttons rock. Set my bf2 scheme up and makes for lot faster weapon switching.
