Well I was mostly joking, like the comparision stuff for fun.
It is listed as 1gig because that is exactly what it is. The fact that it is 2 sticks does not negate its capacity.
Well it's not really, and yes it does.
We can not order 3 x 1gig (2X512MB sticks) for a total of 3 gigs and then put the 6 sticks into 3 slots for a 3 gig system. So the number of sticks does negate it's capacity! So 3 x 1gig (2X512MB sticks) would be 2X1.5gig systems of 3 slots each. Ok, it's 3 gigs you bought but each system is only 1.5gigs.
If you have 4 slots then you could have 2gigs, but capacity has still been negated because you cannot have 4gigs ram by buying 4 sets,8 sticks! So it's not 1gig ram, it's 512MB ram times how ever many sticks you use of it. A 10 pack would be 5 gigs I geuss, but lets see you use it for a 5gig system
The fact that it is sold in sets is kinda besides the point. 1gig could also be 4X256 or 8X128
A 2gig stick would be 2gig, 4x512MB would not be 2gig if you only had 3 slots.
Yes, if you can use 2 sticks then I geuss 2X512MB is 1 gig total. Or 4x512MB is 2gigs etc.., but if you only have 3 slots what would it be? And if you want 2gig in a new system and only have 3 slots can you stack them up????
My gripe is not that they are trying to cheat anything, but if I do a search for 1gig ram and get 50-100 lisitings for 1 gig and 90% are 2X512MB, being only one empty slot availble that is not 1gig ram any more than 4 256MB sticks would be 1gig. Should they list 8X128MB as 1 gig? It would be!
I hate those ebay dealers that do that also, 1gig DDR lisiting, and it's a pack of 8 128's
True it adds up to a total no matter what it is, 1 512MB and 2X256MB would still be 1gig using 3 slots.
And they do clearly say 2X512MB AFTER the slow dailup gets the page loaded or you wade through other garbage to get to the listing. So why not just list it that way to begin with? If people want 2X512MB then is not an equal waste of time for the 1gig sticks to pop up?
It may be matching and dual channel and all that, but still only 2 sticks of 512MB, I could buy 1 512MB stick at Newegg, 1 512MB stick elsewhere, I still have 1 gig ram right.
OR, I could build 2 systems and buy the 2X512MB and each system only has 512MB using 1 stick each.
In any case it's still not buying a 1gig stick for in one available slot.
If I put a 512MB stick in the shopping cart then enter 2 as quantity, is that not still 2X512MB sticks totaling 1gig. Maybe not fancy dual channel or matching, but still 1 gig right.
Kinda my point, no matter how you look at it, a 512MB stick is a 512MB stick no matter how many you have of them. Maybe 4 gigs ram in the house here, but I cannot run any one system on that 4 gigs total, too many sticks! So do I really have 4gigs? Yes I have it, but no I don't either, since I can't use it on that many sticks in one system that I want 4 gigs on. Having 4 slots on that system and wanting 4 gigs ram then anything less than 1gig per stick is not 1gig no mater how many sticks there are of it.
Just for fun,
Since the car stuff did not hold water, how about soda pop?
2X12 IS NOT the same as 1X24 even if they do both equal 24!
Say the stores list "Buy one, get one Free" $3 12packs of Dr. Pepper, Pepsi, Coke, etc...
You see the listing, figure you'll grab a 12 pack of Pepsi for you and a 12pack of Coke for the wife, $3 for 2 12packs right. That's the listing.
But you get to the store and find it's not 12packs "Buy one get one Free" as listed, it's 12pack price for a 24pack case. Ok, your paying for 12 and getting 12 free still, not the same thing though.
Sure either way 24cans for $3, but it's not the same as 2 12packs is it, your stuck with all one flavor in one case. You hate Coke, she hates Pepsi, so you just wasted the time going to the store to get nothing. 1X24 IS NOT the same as 2X12 even if they do both equal 24!
Or if they advertise it as $0.20 a can and 10 different flavors are listed, you get there and it's $4.80 a case for all one flavor! Not the same thing!
With everything being more of a resource hog all the time, if they come out with 5gig ram sticks in the future, should they do 5gig listings, (10X512MB) ???
Of course it would be 5gigs, but how many people would have 10 slots? And what if you want 10gigs total would you have 20 slots?
Well this was just all for fun while doing other stuff and waiting around, hope some people see my points though even though it doesn't realy matter for anything.
Maybe they should list 2000MHz CPUs, (2X1000MHz), maybe they could sell more of the old stock that way

Not that many people could use 2 Cpu's, but 2X1000MHz each would be 2000MHz I guess.
