It's an old Toshiba Satellite 1S57 I believe.
I keep it plugged into a power adapter, but it loses the connection periodically and goes to battery and then dies. When it's plugged in, I can see it go from power plug to battery (without touching anything!).
I've tried a new power cord.
I've tried opening it up but I can't seem to get to the power connector.
Any ideas?
laptop will go to battery and hibernate while plugged in?

It may be a bad plug on the charger, but I doubt it. Try wiggling the cable where it enters the plug - it might be broken inside the wire. It might also be a bad power supply.
99% of the time, though, it's a broken charge jack on the laptop. It breaks inside from mis-handling. Either the jack is broken off the mobo or the mobo itself is cracked. If wiggling the whole plug in the jack makes and breaks the connection, then it's the jack for sure.
If you're brave and you're good at soldering and VERY patient, you can take the unit apart and see what's broken. If you're lucky the jack has just broken loose from the mobo and you can resolder the connections and put a drom of superglue under it to hold it in place. If you're unlucky the mobo is cracked, although someone who knows what he's doing might still be able to fix that.
I would strongly recommend you download the service manual for the alppy before starting this. Taking apart lappies is VERY complicated. They're like swiss watches inside, and you usually have to completely disassemble them to get to the jack.
If you're not up to it, find a local Mom & Pop type PC repair shop (NOT a big chain store) that does this sort of work.
Good luck!

I will second FP on that. Laptops are very confusing to get apart. Dont try to force anything, some of them have hidden clips and stuff you could break off without even knowing. And also, its a very anal way of doing it, but u may want to put the screws in bags or something and label them, because there are alot of them, and when you go to put it back together, its easy to forget whats what.
Have no fear, the BEEF is here.
