So I started building a new system for my in-laws this AM and was stumped when I went to plug the PSU into the motherboard. The PSU has 24 pins but the motherboard only accepts 20 pins. After doing some reading I find this article that says that the last four pins can be separated from the first 20. Unfortunately, the system is at home and I can't verify that right now, but the PSU is an Antec one, so I'm assuming that I should be OK.

My question is about the extra 4 pins. Can I use those pins to plug into the +12v plug on the motherboard? Or are they basically useless if the mobo doesn't require 24 pins?

Basically useless. You shouldn't even try to plug those 4 into the 12v on the mobo. Or you'd have no mobo

what he said, they did that to add compatiblity with mobos that had pins,circuits,etc next to the 20pin that would prevent a stock 24pin psu from fitting
