According to memos recently obtained by DailyTech, AMD will drastically cut prices on its desktop processors after the July 23rd release of Intel’s Core 2 Duo Conroe processors. The memos that DailyTech has secured are between AMD and Japanese system manufacturers and indicate the following price cuts will become effective July 24th, 2006:

* AMD Athlon 64 price cuts will receive price cut up to 30%
* AMD Athlon 64 X2 will receive price cuts up to 50%
* AMD Sempron processors will receive price cuts up to 15%

(...)

Perhaps the most interesting price reductions are on the Athlon 64 X2 dual core line. The memo claims the Athlon 64 X2 3800+ will fall from a processor-in-box (PIB) of $303 to $169. Single core Athlon 64 3800+ processors will fall from $290 all the way to $139 through special promotions...

I have an Athlon64 4000+ now and I can't see upgrading to dual core. Dual core doesn't do anything for gaming yet, and I have all the processing power I need right now for desktop apps.

Maybe at the end of the year.

Thanks FP,
I think you just saved me a bundle of cash perhaps. I was thinking of upgrading because of the 2 systems with problems here.

I still have the one flakey system which now instead of the no signal video error it was giving will now just shut down durring boot the first time and usaully boots fine the second try then runs all night.
Other system is just plain down with nothing happening but fans reving up and down like on/off quickly.

I been debating rather to just buy new system boards for 1700xp and 2500xp or go with board and cpu for the 64bits. Geuss now I know :)

Got any news which way other prices will be going? Like will ram go up/down or hold steady?
Seriously wondering when to buy the Ram since I will want maybe 2 gig in a new main box.
I mean if cheap 64bit cpus cause an upgrade RUSH will the supply of ram dwindle and jack up prices, or perhaps more demand actually bring them down?
