Logitech MX1000 Wireless Laser Mouse mini-review

Post by FlyingPenguin »

Well it was new mouse time for me. Up til now I've been a pretty faithful Microsoft user. I LOVED the old MS Explorer mouse and have owned all three versions (1 thru 3).

Unfortunately MS made some stupid decisions with their laser mouse: it's not a gaming quality mouse, and the wheel is almost useless (no indents - it's a smooth non-tactile wheel).

On the basis of a lot of recommendations I bought the Wireless Logitech MX1000 Laser Mouse and I must say it's an excellent mouse. Silky smooth, a mouse wheel with a tactile wheel, and it's BIG like the Explorer mouse and fits my big hand comfortably.

I do not use the software/drivers with it - I have never used mouse drivers/software not even with the Explorer mice. Windows itself handles everything just fine and all modern games recognize the basic 5 buttons without software.

As with most of these new mice the left/right wheel rocking is almost worthless. It only works with left/right scroll and is not recognized in games. Pretty much worthless except in Photoshop or a large spreadsheet.

Great mouse. Been gaming heavily for 2 days since I bought it and I like it as lot.

Nice mini-review FP. I own the MS laser mouse 6000 and I disagree with you in that it is an able gamer although it doesn't have the traditional indentations the original MS intellimouse had that I loved and grew accustomed to it does have the tactile "top" for every wheel click up or down. I will go to check the logitech mx1000 out myself as anything that is closer to the original ms mouse is what i desire. thanks again for your review.

Logitech mice are the best..

I have had the 700.. wireless.. and. even thought it was nice.. I couldn't game w/ it.. so I went to the 510.. and it works great for web/work and gaming..

now for the Dedicated gaming.. I chose a Logitech G5.. on the fly resilution adjustment.. great for FPS games.. that is my dedicated Lan/Gaming mouse..

Daman: Reviews for the MS 6000 (which I was going to buy) all said it didn't have tactile clicks to the wheel. One of the main reasons I went with the Logitech. So you're saying they changed it?

One of the other things that sold me on the Logitech is that it has nearly twice the resolution than the MS laser. Nothing noticeable in gaming probably, but I bet it makes a different in Photoshop.

I have found the logitech to be very precise in games so far.

I do miss the much larger thumb buttons on the older (v1 & v2) MS Explorer mice, and even the MS Explorer v3 has slightly bigger buttons, but a day's worth of gaming taught my thumb where to find it.

I also didn't like the thumb groove at first, but after a couple of days it's okay. On the MS Explorer your thumb really doesn't have a rest area like the MX1000 but I have no preference either way.

One thing I did notice is that I couldn't use the thick gel mouse wrist pad I used to use - on the MX1000 your wrist has to sit at a lower angle (which is probably more ergonomic) and the thick pad I used to use put my wrist at too high an angle. I dug out an old worn out pad that was thinner and that works just fine.

This is my first wireless mouse also. I really never saw a need for wireless and still don't - "tails" don't bother me. Bothers me more having to remember to put the mouse in the charger. The good thing is that the battery life seems to be monstrously long and it charges fast.

I now have his 700, and I don't see what the problem with gaming is. It works perfectly for me. It's very responsive in games, and it works rather well for me

Yup it has the indents on the wheel as well as stops one step at a time (no free non-stop wheeling). I will try the Logitech out for a few weeks, god know I need the few extra frags in my game.

The MX 1000 powers down when not used thus its rechargable battery last a very long time between charging, like perhaps months. I've had several cordless mice that used replaceble batteries which didn't last nearly as long, usually because some light would remain flickering even when not in use.
I really like cordless mice and once you get use to them, corded mice seem annoying in comparison. I don't see a point for bluetooth mice however.

I am currently using the G5 which I like. I also have the mx1000 which I like better but the damn thing doesnt track right. If I move the mouse parallel from right to left the pointer (or weapon) will track slightly downwards. Makes it hard to line up a moving target.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

No problem with tracking here, and I'd be VERY aware of it if it was happening. I'm pretty fussy about that.

Might be a bad mouse.

Also, are you using their software? Is so try uninstalling it. I NEVER use mouse software or drivers. They cause more headaches than anything else.

Most Logitech Mouses are very programable, so you can change the additional buttons to do other tasks. My setup makes my computer much more efficent.
