Question:
I am trying to connect to a network drive with a username and password. Problem is when I connect XP is not giving me the option to enter a username. See pic


any ideas?

This means that anonymous logon is enabled and by default it take only
'Guest' user. You need to edit some settings on the machine you are
connecting to as follows:
1) Start -> Run -> secpol.msc
2) Goto Security settings -> Local Policies --> Security options
3) For the policy 'Network access haring and security model for local
accounts' change the security setting to 'Classic'
4) Save the settings

The computer Im connecting to is not a computer it is a NAS so I do not have that option.

You can't login as a guest? You're certain the NAS box requires a username? Seems like the NAS is not giving you the option of entering one.

Can you login with a usename from another computer on the network? If so, then maybe networking is not fully enabled on this PC. You might try temporarily creating a shared folder on this PC which should, in the process, setup networking properly.

the NAS does have an "all user" option...like a guest it opens the directory to all users.
Problem is when I want to set rights for specific users to folders and I access the NAS from an XP box I have to be logged in to XP as that user. I just want to enter a user name.

Example the rights to a folder are set for Paul. I am logged in on my computer as John but I want to enter the directory for Paul ... the computer will not let me enter the user name, it only logs in as the user in XP.

Might be a security feature. Win2K used to be like that - you had to be logged into the share as the same user you were logged in on the computer.

XP did away with that with the ability to log onto a network share as someone else, but it sounds like the NAS refuses to use that feature.

If you have the same problem with more than one XP PC then I'd say it's a a feature of the NAS and you'll just have to use the user name that's used on each computer.

Yes .. it is that way with all computers on the network.

Take the NAS back and build a Server 2003 box

yeah yeah yeah... This is MUCH smaller and gives a nice ftp.

Anyways...I found a work around...if you map the drive it will give you an option to log in as a different user.
