What would you buy if you had the choice for a DVD Dual Layer r/rw drive
Liteon or ASUS or what would you recommend?

ASUS Drive

LITEON Drive

I personally like Lite-On. I've never had any problems with them.

Ditto plus they come with Nero (non OEM)

I agree with both. I'd go for LiteOn. While ASUS is an awesome mobo maker, their optical drives leave a bit to be desired in my experience

Between the 2 you mentioned I would definitely get the Lite-on. But personally , I prefer the
NEC DVD-RW. I have used the Lite-on, worked fine, but it is a little loud, IMHO.

I've been very happy with Lite-on and NEC.

Yah, Lite-On and NEC are my two main brands.. I did pick up a few Pioneer's for the three builds I'm doing right now since the price wasn't much different. I'll let you guys know how they work out.

I guess the LiteOn it is then.
I do have a Maddog which is a NEC with a different sticker on it, but a friend wants a DVD burner but does not have the money so I suggested I'll upgrade mine and he can have my old one. I sure hope the Liteon comes with a full version of NERO.

Yeah, Mad Dog is just a rebrander. I had a GeForceFX 5600+ from them. It ended up being a flashed Prolink 5200.

I've had bad luck with Lite-On drives in the past, but it's been a while since I've used them. They seem pretty well-rated now. Most Sony-brand opticals are rebadged Lite-Ons.

As for the Asus, as far as I know Asus doesn't actually manufacture optical drives, they just re-brand.

OTOH, I have two NEC drives (a "Mad Dog" ND-2510) and a 3550, and both work very well for me.

They do not come with NERO Full version, just with a OEM Nero Suit. I bought one OEM and one retail package, but both came with the OEM Suite.

But it sure is a nice and quiet drive, quieter then my old NEC.

hmmm, I just built a computer for a coworker. He had ordered a Lite-On, and it was so much louder than my NEC, he put the Lite-on in his kids computer and bought him a NEC.
