Speaker system losing sound

i have had a polk audio AMR130 5.1 system for a few years now. sometimes if the speakers were on and nothing playing i would hear popping at random intervals for random lengths. or sometimes it would sound more like someone rubbing a hot microphone on some carpet.
now more lately the sound will completely cut out for periods of time, especially when i really want to use them. when i power them on, it will give an initial pop and the power led stays on, but when i turn up the volume, there will be no hum.
it is definately the speakers, i have tried different sound cards, different systems, and different cables.
i opened up the sub to look for anything unusual and everything looked alll right. nothing burnt or loose.
i am looking more now at the transformer. anyone have any experience with this type problem? would a faulty transformer create these issues? can i get another transformer with the same specs, or do i have to get that exact one?
