i just did a hs/fan upgrade on an athlon64 system. i am much more accustomed to doing these on socket A than socket 754. i have put quite a few on, but this is the first time i have ever taken one off.

i was able to unlock the clips for the heatsink so it was just sitting there in its plastic frame, but i was wondering why the heatsink wouldn't come off as everything was unattached. so, i very carefully pried it off with a small flathead. imagine my surprise when it came off with the CPU firmly attached!

somehow, i pulled the cpu out of the socket with the little socket lock lever still down. i had pulled it straight up, balancing the pressure and as a small miracle would be, none of the pins were bent.

of course, the whole time i was working on it i was hoping it would not be in vain. i put the lock lever up and dropped the chip in , locked it back in place and the chip held firm.

i know now that i should have taken the bolts off the plastic frame and slowly twisted it till it comes loose as that is how i finally got the chip off the heatsink.

everything is back together and is running great. but i really did think it was fubared!

Yeah, I've pulled a locked CPU out of a socket once. That wakes you up in a hurry. :)

lol Yah, I did this the first time I swapped the HS/F on my A64 setup.. I almost **** a brick thinking I killed it.. But it's still running strong. :)

Been there done that. Even had one where the pins got seriously bent. Took me awhile to straighten them out with needle nose pliers. Sweating the whole time.

I did this to a crap Emachine p2 400 or so. The fan had completely broke and pulling the proc out like this bent about 90% of the pins. I just tossed the computer at that point. Lucky for me the few times it has happened since I have been lucky enought to not damage anything. Stupid thermal paste.

Well.. I had the 3 mobo's in 48 hours fry deal a few weeks ago.. damn PSU was the culprit..

anyway.. I use a aftermarket HS/F setup.. the Hyper48.. it's a beast.. but it works.. and every time I pull the HS/F off.. the chip comes with it.. never fails.. so I get out the trusty pocket knife.. and gently pry the chip loose.. I have bent a pin or 2.. but managed to straighten them and it always fires up.. so it's never been an issue..

Ohh and I have tried cleaning off the Thermal Goop.. I think it's AS5 I used.. and reapplying new.. and same thing happens..

If I have to remove any heatsink (vga,chipset,cpu,ect...), I always fire up the machine if it is working and together so the thermal paste is not so hard and then shut it down and remove the sink as quickly as possible. Usually works but I have also pulled a few out with the socket still locked. Never bent any pins though. Imagine if the 775 didnt have the locking cover over the cpu, talk about a chinese fire drill!

to straighten your pins dont use pliers, use a mechanical pencil (cant remember what size, just see what fits) remove the pencil lead, push the button and insert the bent pin and carefully straighten out. :)
