Hard Drive Errors

Post by GuardianAsher »

I have an old 80GB Samsung SV8004H. I put it in my main rig as a slave, and I used it to copy my DL's and MV's onto. Well, I tried to run a Battlefield 2 patch from it, and it closed, giving me a Cyclic Redundancy Check error. I ran Scandisk on it, and it came up clean. What can I do about it?

Cyclic Redundancy errors could mean data is corrupt, or the drive is failing, or you just have a bad ribbon or dirty contacts, or poor contact (ribbon plug not fully seated).

I'd swap the ribbon cable. Uplugging and re-inserting the plug into the drive and mobo connectors a few times will scrap corrosion off the contacts. You can also use a VERY LIGHT MISTING of contact cleaner or WD-40 (contact cleaner is better - no residue - you can get it at Radio Shack).

To play safe I would also recommend you run the HDD manufacturer's diagnostic to make sure the drive isn't failing.

Hope this helps...

The ribbon cable and contacts are fine. The ribbon is brand new, and I checked the contacts thouroughly. And when I have the same connector of the cable plugged into another HD, everything works fine.

I got the Redundancy error because of the HD. I copied a good file onto it the day before, and when I tried to use it, I got that error.

And as for the manufacturer's diagnostics... there isn't one... I looked as well as I could, and didn't find anything.

Spinrite... me no have. And I'm a poor high school kid without a job...

They have this utility. It doesn't specifically list your model, but it says "other older models" so it might work for you.

I think I should ressurect this. I dug the HD back out of the closet just for the hell of it. JimZ, thanks for the link, but that doesn't even recognize my drive as a Samsung. I ran SpinRite on it, and it doesn't run right, my computer keeps just shutting off. Any other suggestions?

If you're trying to recover data off it, I've had good luck with "Recover My Files".

But if Samsung's diagnostic (SHDIAG) doesn't recognize the drive, I'd say it's a lost cause.
