I'm wanting to upgrade my main rig. At the moment, I'm running an AMD Athlon XP 3000+. I want to upgrade to a 64-bit setup, and I want to know if it's really worth it to do so. I already know I'm going for Socket 754 since 939 is really way out of my reach at the moment. I have my eyes on...

AMD Sempron 64 3100+ Palermo 800MHz FSB 256KB L2 Cache

AMD Athlon 64 2800+ Newcastle 800MHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 800MHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache

Am I going to see any significant improvement in performance with any of these processors over my old one? Will it be worth it to spend the money and upgrade? I'm a pretty hardcore gamer.

I already have a mobo lined up for this 64-bit Setup, and about a Gb of RAM. Please let me know, I'm new to the 64-bit architecture.

Honestly.. stay away from 754... go 939.. you'll have more options..

if your just going to get your feet wet.. check out monarch computer at http://www.monarchcomputer.com and see what they have for barebones.. or..build a box on newegg..

need help.. let me know.. I am just a shot down the road.. and more or less free on the weekends..

I have to agree with Qui Gon-Jinn. I think you will have more upgrade options in the future if you go with the 939 mobo. I would think what you have now should be fine for any game out right now, it's plenty fast. What kind of video card you using. You money might be better spent upgrading the video card and holding off on the mobo.

AGP. I have my eyes on a 939 mobo that has both a PCI-E and AGP in it
