network is one server running win2k - 5 pcs xp pro - attached - the log onto server to get ips, etc.

dsl modem>switch>server>pcs

two of the pcs suddenly went south from the network (can't connect) and get the error message "network connection has limited or no connectivcity"

three others are still up and running (though i got a call today about one)

both pcs are listed as computers in the domain
both users are listed as users in the domain
tcp/ip is set to autodetect

none of my monkey see monkey do stuff is working - tried replicating the settings from the other computers - I originally installed all these computers without a problem on the network

one of them is unknown spyware wise, but the other is clean for virus/spyware
i tried swapping in a clean machine - same result - switched ports on the switch to known working ports...

any ideas greatly appreciated..........TIA

this is the office with a lot of power outages - server is on a battery thingy but power can be down there for >1 hr at times

dunno if this would help, but when I couldn't get my computer to connect to the network I had to go in and change the speed to 10mbits half duplex and it started working, just something to try

check the IP's on the problem computers...if it says limited or no network connectivity on them it may be due to the DHCP server being down on the domain controller and they now have APIPA addresses...i would check the DHCP server and make sure the service is up and also that the scope hasn't run out of IP's, etc.

you checked the network cables coming out of the wall correct ?

then you checked the run from the wall to the server right ?

ok, working on it now - cabling was all fine - looks like it is some kind of recurring DHCP server issue which I guess is related to the power outages here - that stuff is a little beyond my skill level - anyway. I came down here today to just throw in a router for the nat stuff and throw all the computers into a workgroup because we really don't need/use the server functions ... they told me there was a big lightning storm yesterday and after the power came back up....they were back on the local net....lol

I am still going to take all the workstations out of the domain I think and just put them in a workgroup and the just set up a user id so they can get to the files they need on the server - all it really does is serve as a repository for the case management data files but all the processes are run locally

not a really elegant solution, but that is what I did in our other office after the "take the money and run" IT people we had set up the server completely screwed it up and wanted big $$ to fix it 30 days later - we haven't had much luck with folks around here unfortunately - I may just disable the DHCP on the server and install the router I bought anyway because it has a much stiffer firewall

If they don't need all the functions of a domain and just need a basic workgroup I say that is better off, just explain the importance of local user accounts and privleges :)
Probably best to have the Router run DHCP, it since there is no real need for it on the server if it is just serving that one purpose, though they might want to looking into more UPSs for their desktop PCs :)

Though people worry about elegance, your customer really doesn't care as long as they can do everything without problems, I have had one person be straight up with me, He said, "I don't care how you do it or how much it costs, we need it to work right and to not worry about constant problems."

still a work in progress, but put the pc's in a separate workgroup, swapped out the old switch for a decent one, replaced the nic on one of the pc's and everything is good to go atm ... when i have time I will install the router put the server in the workgroup as well...thanks for all the feedback
