Does anyone know of a reliable freeware data shreddder? I need to completely wipe out all data on a hard disk.
If I can do this via boot disk, even better.

get the Ultimite Boot cd
it contains several great programs (dariks nuke is one on there)

And the downloadable iso is bootable as well, so just use nero to burn the iso to a cs and your all set

Where do you recommend I dowload the Ultimate Boot Disk from?

How hard would it be to recover once I run Darik's?

Use any program that writes all zeros to the hard drive 5 times or more (considered a "military" wipe).

Practically impossible to recover that. Warning: the process does take a LONG time (half a day or more depending on the size of the drive).

I've never used Darik's before... will I have to run it 5 times or can it be set to do so?

Never used it either. Most of them ask you how many passes.

From what I remember when I ran Deriks (about 2 days ago). You select the partition on the drive, and you select the method. There are about 7 options it has and it describes each one. Select the one you want and hit f10 to start and let it go

It shows its progress too
