Any of you guys out there have any tips for speeding up older laptops? I have an ancient old P200MMX lappy w/32MB of RAM that used to play StarCraft just fine and now it's choppy as hell. I'm also working on a Toshiba Satellite with 160MB of RAM and an AMD K6/2 450mhz. Is there anything I can enable disable or change to speed them up a little? Any old tips of the trade I don't yet know about? TIA!

A clean install of 98SE should be mighty fast on that Toshiba. The P200 would make a nice doorstop.

Seriously, I'd do a clean install if it's not too painful. Disable all the eye candy (menu animations, show contents of windows while dragging, etc).

If you want to try to speed them up as is, disable ALL background apps that aren't absolutely necessary. Use AVG 7 free anti-virus or an old Norton like 2002 (AVG would be faster though).

Run a spyware cleaner on it. You can't use MS Anti-spyware because it doesn't support 98 but Webroot's Spysweeper runs in 98 just fine.

If you do a clean install on that Toshiba, you might also consider installing Win2K Pro instead of 98. You'll have to see if there's any drivers on Toshiba's website, though. 2K would run nice on that system with 160Mb of RAM, and be more stable than 98.
