OK ... I have a dead Laptop. Compaq 1200
I would like to pull the screen off and use it as a second monitor. Anyone know of a place that could help me out here? I am expecting I will need to convert the ribon connection to 15pin or DVI in some way shape or form.

As I understand it, most of these aren't a standard DVI (and they definately wouldn't be SVGA).

Considering what a 15" LCD goes for nowadays, I can't see that it would be worth it. If I were you I'd sell the lappy on Ebay. They're getting $100 for the LCD alone.

Dead laptops are always in demand for parts - especially a popular model like the Compaq 1200.
