XP and ISA modems

Had a hell of a time installing an ISA modem for my neighbor across the street. Her win2k original install (no service packs), was taking a dump. Her 10 year old 2 gig HD was making clanking noises, and the diagnostic tool also confirmed that the drive was dying. The other drive was a 40 gig Maxtor drive that checked out ok.
So I format the 40 gig and remove the old 2 gig drive from the system. Got XP installed, but I could not get her ISA modem to install. I found one Google search that said ISA modems are not supported in XP. Is this true? She also has a Sound Blaster 16 ISA card that works just fine in XP.
Digging through all my old junk, I found another ISA modem that had PNP as an option. I put that one in and installed the drives so it seems to work OK.
Just curious as to the statement that xp does not work with ISA cards, or do they cards need to be PNP?
