hello all!
if when 'saving/moving/deleting' a file from a harddisk should there be any type of noise?? i bought a samsung 'ultra quiet 160gb' and its become noisy....
ive formatted and restarted the 'h-disk' a few times before..could this be why??
i have 2 h-disks:
samsung 5200rpm 160gb =C:/program + D:/music
seagate 7200rpm 80gb = H:/ other
should i have the OP installed on the seagate 80gb...would that increase system peformance??

If a hard drive clicks or clunks it's bad. That's the death rattle of a hard drive. Bad sectors.
I recommend you download the manufacturer's drive diagnostic software from their website and do a full diagnostic.
If it's just spindle noise (sounds like a continuous high pitched whine, or line metal rubbing metal) then there's no imminent failure but it'll only get louder in time and eventually lead to a failure. It'll also run hot. If it's under warranty I would return it for replacement. A noisy drive is a valid reason to RMA a hard drive with most manufacturers.
If you've never RMA'd a drive before, it's simple. Go to the manufacturer's website, go to the link for RMA or Warranty check, enter the serial number. It'll tell you whether or not it's under warranty and you'll have the option to fill out an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) form.
If you can't afford to be without the drive then request an "Advanced RMA" which means that they send you a replacement drive first (usually 2 day air) and then you swap drives, copy your data from the old drive, and then pack the old drive in the same box and ship it back. You pay shipping either way. I recommend UPS so you have proof of delivery. It costs $6 - $7 to ship a hard drive via UPS Ground. You have to give them a credit card number as a guarantee that you'll return the old drive, but they don't charge you unless they don't get the drive in 30 days.
To answer your other question - yes, I would HIGHLY recommend that you move the boot partition to the faster 7200 RPM drive. It'll make a substantial improvement in system performance. I wouldn't use a 5400 RPM drive for anything but archiving (like MP3's). You definately don't want to run apps from a slow drive if you have a choice.
Frankly if you bought the Samsung in a retail store within the last 30 days, I'd return it and get a 7200 RPM drive instead. There's no good reason to buy a 5400 RPM drive anymore - 7200 RPM drives are not much more expensive.
I also personally don't think much of Samsung drives. Right now the best drive is Seagate in my opinion - one of the few companies that backs their drives with a 5 year warranty.
