I guess my dad has gotten tired of his VHS (says parts are falling out of it go figure ha ha) and wants some recomendations for a DVR. I have NO experience with these what so ever (other than ATI AIW cards

).. So, if you guys could post links to what you've heard is good/have used (preferably stand alone not TiVo or DirectTV style)..
TIA!

Your guess is as good as mine, it's some little podunk cable company, it's nothing fancy at all. GM Express or something, I don't remember.. But I think he'd really prefer something he can call "His" and take with him, and something that writes directly to DVD and not have to hassle w/HD space.

i've had good luck with replaytv - got two of them atm - never any problems and the wife learned how to use it easily...they are a little pricey now .... the 50xx series has commercial skip which the new ones don't -

They are nice, my room mate has one, but I like mine better, I have a DirecTiVo
The DVR's from the Sat. companys are the best, they are the only true 100% digital, no loss of quality at all, and they have 2 tuners, so you can record 2 things @ once.
